Hi there I'm going to be in Barcelona and i need to get to Germany. I need to leave Barcelona on the 26th and am hoping to get to Germany (any main city in Germany) by the 29th. Currently i am going via Nice and Milan and then into Frankfurt. Not only is this a very tine consuming route but it also has a few 5 minute changeovers on the way, i am very nervous about these as if i miss them i am screwed. Could someone either put my mind at ease and advise me about the 5 minute stopovers or even better tell me a better route from Barca to Germany. This route must avoid the French Tvg (or trv or whatever) fast trains and the ridiculous reservations which have caused nothing but tears in the past. I was thinking maybe there is some way to go regionally via montpellier, Lyon and Nancy in some way? Or strasbourg? i'm willing to stay overnight somewhere if needs be. Anyway this is getting very long now, any input at all will be welcomed (hopefully ib the next couple of days so i can cancel my hotels in Milan and Nice if needs be)

Why you don't go via laTour-de-Carol to Perpigan - than catch night train to strasbourg?!
You should get a reservation for this night train in spain too.
Or maybe you can go via Montpellier - stay there overnight. And on 27. you go via Lyon-geneve to Strasbourg. This is possible without any reservations.
Montpellier is very nice and maybe you can stay there two nights?! And Strasbourg is of cours not milan, but worth to see too.

Hi.
I also recommend the connection Loiseau told you:
Little Yellow Train - Perpignan - Strasbourg by night train - and then for example by local train via Kehl to Offenburg (Germany), from where you can use German trains: [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux]

Thank you very much this is very useful. I think i will get the night train. Does the train fill up or will i be able to get a reservation on the day of travel at the station? I don't see how else i can do it otherwise.

Hi.
You can never preview if a night train is full or not. I recommend to book some days in advance. Should be possible at larger railway stations in Spain as well.

So as if i wasn't finding it difficult enough to get home, there is now some sort of rail strike in France which means i cannot leave Spain. I know you are 'railccs' and not 'allmodesoftransportdudes' but is there any way of getting to Germany last minute by coach or something?

Thank you for all your help, couldn't get a place on a bus, resigned myself to getting a train 2 days late. One more question; i went to Barcelona Santa station, they said i could not book a Cerbere to Strasbourg train until i get to Cerbere, i will try to get there at about midday on the 28th, if the night train is booked up, is there an alternate route i can use? P.s. Honestly thanks for all the swift replies and the website in general has been by far my most useful tool on this trip, i have recommended it to everyone who would listen, keep up the good work!

Maybe you can try to reserve via internet on sncf.fr?!

The only way to make reservations online in France is by getting them sent to a home address as i have already been on the road for a couple of months and didn't plan anything in advanced, this system is of no use to me. I will just have to hope there is space on the day.
