Hi there,
I have never used an interail ticket before and was just wondering how you actually use the ticket, for example do you simply walk onto a train and show your ticket if asked to by one of the staff.
Also, how do you reserve tickets? Do you have to reserve a seat at a station and if so is it simply a case of showing the interail ticket?
Any clarification would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Ben

Hi there,
Good questions; easy answers.
First timer step by step guide:

Reservations:
Declare that you have an Interrail pass when you make a reservation at the station. Many trains require a reservation these days so best to do so and avoid any possible penalty for non-compliance. As trains can be very busy in the summer on popular routes, it's also a good idea to make your reservation as soon as you can to avoid disappointment. I do it when I arrive at a new destination so that it's taken care of and I don't need to return and stand in queues before my departure.

Control:
You will not usually be asked to show the pass when booking but on the train you most certainly will, and it will be checked for validity and possibly marked by the controller. Sometimes you might also be asked to show your passport to prove you are the purchaser.
I advise keeping the pass, which is rather flimsy, in a waterproof sealable plastic wallet. They tend to deteriorate quite quickly and if it gets soggy you'll have difficulty using it.
Have a most excellent trip.
