Hi there
Do i really need to use a rucksack on inter rail, or is a standard wheeled suitcase sufficient?
We intend to visit mainly cities so we were wondering if it wouldn't be more comfy to take a suitcase.
Thanks in advance

It is up to you. I prefer the rucksack, as it is easier to carry. I`ve seen so much people with those wheeled suitcases on trains, fighting to get their luggage fitting through the rows of seats, or struggling to place them in the luggage hold. The backpack will fit, where you fit ;)
But I think, for a city trip, where you only carry your luggage over short distances, a suitcase will be ok.

for me rucksack is much better, but sometimes (especially if you are a girl and have heavy luggage) I may consider a wheeled backpack:

Hi
Having just completed a forty day and night circuit of European capital cities by night trains, I can tell you of my experience.
I took an 8 kg wheeled back-pack (carry-on luggage size on the flight from Australia). Each morning I packed a small daypack with the essentials for the day and parked the back-pack in a luggage locker at the railway station. Then walked.
I actually never had the larger back-pack on my back because in most cities I only used it between the train and luggage locker in the morning, and vice versa in the evening. For short stays in a city, or when my deoarture was from a different station, I did take the larger pack with me but also found it easier to wheel rather than put on my back. I usually did not bother unpacking the day-pack but just slung it on my back and then checked it over when on the train overnight.
This routine may not be suitable if you are staying in hostels or hotel accommodation. But it worked very well for me.
Regard
Richard
