I'm planning my travels for august now,
this is something i haven't done before and i'm doing alone and im getting lost in the process of planning.

Is it a viable option to book my hostels for the locations that i want to be in now, then say if i spend 2 nights in each location, on the day of arrival sort out my reservation for leaving 2 days later?
e.g.

I will arrive in Paris on the 7th of August, i have a hostel booked there for 2 nights, and from there i want to head straight to rome on the 9th, spend 2 nights there then head to pisa.

so should i book my hostels now and then work from there and work my train reservations from that when i arrive at a location.

or is it crucial that i book my train reservations now?

I wanted to start in paris, then head to rome, pisa, monaco, nice, marseille and finish in barcelona spending 2 nights in each location, but getting my head around this reservation system seems to be a whole mess, and in this case with reservations where the viability of overnight trains come into it all and saving on hostels.

What would you recommend for this planning process, am i on the right lines or way off?

Hi!

When I plan a journey and book in advance I usually start with the train reservations and book hostels afterwards. For instance I did two trips to Lisbon in February 2010 and 2012 and booked train reservations up to Lisbon in advance and after I got these I also booked hostels in Paris and Lisbon. On the trip back home I then travelled quite spontaneously and booked needed reservations on the go.

What I would do now: Get a rough idea of the route and optimize where needed. For instance, Paris - Rome directly will be a bit difficult as the direct Thello night train is not included in the InterRail ticket.
I dont know what ticket you want to buy but I think you should go with a regular ticket for the Thello night train, available in the online shop: [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux] and a 5in15 IR ticket for the remaining trips.

BTW, apart from the Paris - Rome Thello night train there are no other night trains available on your route.

You can get by the whole route from Rome to Barcelona without any reservations, depending on which connections you choose. Have a look here: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

So, I think it would be enough to book the Thello train plus hostels in Paris and Rome now...the remaining hostels can then be booked on the go or in advance as well, whatever you prefer.

Help us helping you and purchase your Interrail pass via our partner link [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you. :)
