Morning / afternoon / evening folks,

New to the forum and have been seriously considering Inter-Railing for later this year (Sept) for 22/10 days / journeys ........ or saving and doing a 30day excursion next summer.

Flying out from Belfast my ideal route would be

Paris - Barcelona - Monaco - Milan - Ljubjana - Budapest - Wien - Munich - Amsterdam

Ive always had it in my head the bulk or more days would be spent in Italy, as id love to tour around with friends and see Milan / Rome / Florence / Napes / Venezia. After this, Lake Bled would be a must based on what ive heard.
Ive read many people on here saying to leave at least 1 travel journey free, so ive picked 9 from an available 10 above. To be honest I could probably drop Wein, it just seemed like a nice place to visit.
Plenty of helpful tips elsewhere on here like the little yellow train from Paris - Barca etc.

My main questions, would people recommend me doing this in say Sept / Oct ??? Im holidaying in Portugal in August, and id only be able to go in Sept / Oct or should I save it for next summer when the weather is better and warmer. One appealing thing about going in Sept / Oct would be football season would be back in full swing and I and friends would be very keen to visit stadiums and matches wherever possible.

Any input would be much appreciated guys.

Cheers,
Danny

Hi Danny,

nice route. Sept/Oct would still be ok to travel in my opinion, not as hot and crowded as in peak summer but if you are a bit lucky still good weather to be expected.

As you've already read the Petit Train Jaune in France might be a good addition to the trip: https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/

From Milan I would adapt the trip a little and include the Bernina Railway: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
Then, take the night train from Sargans (or Zürich, if you want to make a short visit there) through to Budapest; then Wien (can be just a short one day stopover or you leave it out completely taking the direct train Budapest - Ljubljana although the city is worth a visit IMO) - Ljubljana/Lake Bled and night train to Munich - night train to Amsterdam (or travel during the day, as you like).

If thought through carefully you will get by without any extra reservations except those for travel on night trains; and you will make very good use of your pass.
You could then also use the last (unused) travel day of your pass for an extra excursion in the last third or so of your trip, when it will be clear that it is not needed as backup anymore.

Help us helping you and purchase your IR pass in our partner: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] - thank you. :)
