Hi Folks,
I've searched the forum, but I can't see anything that specifically answers my question.
I'm trying to book the train(s) that will take me from Avignon to Rome...
leaving Avignon Sept 20 or 21, 2013
Time is not a big issue...can take a couple of days or more if necessary.
I would like to take the coastal route I have seen described elsewhere.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks, Peter

Hi Peter!
Is this the only trip you are going to do by train?
To book online, use rail.shop/sncf for the trips within France and rail.shop/acprail/trenitalia for the trips within Italy.
Depending on how much time you want to spend in total, I would suggest an overnight stop in Nice and another one somewhere in the Cinque Terre (or at least in the area, for instance at Genoa).
Some example trips from Nice to Rome can be found here: https://rail.cc/en/train/nice-to-rome
For detailed schedules: https://rail.cc/en/train-ticket-schedules
To remain totally flexible it might make sense to buy tickets for the part from Nice to Genoa/Cinque Terre locally. Fares for local trains are quite cheap and easy to obtain at ticket machines or the counter.
If you have more time it could be interesting to stop at Marseille as well (Cultural Capital of Europe 2013) and maybe make one or two day trips around Nice.

Hi...is it Flo?
thanks for the response...much appreciated....I have a quote (Australian company) for tickets from Avignon, via Nice- Ville and Ventimiglia to Rome, but they have routed me through Milan...which seems to me to be unnecessary...as I would rather take the coastal trip through Genoa, and down the coast....is that possible?
Is that a local train, and would that be ok to book at the time of travel?
What I was actually planning was to take the train from Paris down to Carcasonne (2 nights)...then train to Avignon (3 nights) etc...then to Rome, where we have a cruise booked through to Venice.
Total cost for the train tickets amounts to some $AU800 for the 2 of us...for the one-way journey.
I am quite happy with the cost...$100 either way is not an issue...I just wanted to take the coastal route, and thought it best to book tickets now, as they appear to be somewhere near double the price if I wait till I get there.
Thanks for your help anyway...
cheers for now...Peter

Hi!
Do you have any tickets booked yet? Do you want to travel 1st or 2nd class?
You should be able to compare prices and book tickets for France directly at the SNCF website, use our partner link: [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux]
For instance you could get Paris - Carcassonne on 17 September for less than 100€ in 2nd class for two persons if you book now (or in the near future). Carcassonne - Nice again for less than 100€.
Nice - Ventimiglia - Genoa is no problem to do with local trains and tickets bought at the station; Nice - Ventimiglia is about 6€ per person; Ventimiglia - Genova is about 13€ per person. There are frequent local trains on that route, no need to prebook or make reservations (which is in fact not possible).
If you want you can also travel from Ventimiglia to Genova with an InterCity train which will be of a bit higher quality than the local trains. Regular fare is only 19€ so no need really to prebook.
From Genova you can book a long distance train to Rome, for prices and bookings check rail.shop/acprail/trenitalia
It is not necessary to go via Milano; I assume they want to sell you a ticket for a high speed train from Milano via Bologna - Firenze to Roma which you do not need if you want to travel along the coast. There are several direct InterCity and Frecciabianca services from Genova along the coast to Rome. Tickets for these trains include a reservation, you need to be lucky to get seats on the correct side of the train (on the right hand side for views of the sea).
Oh, I almost forgot...you want to travel Nice - Rome in one go, right? Without a stop at Genova? Then I would recommend this connection: https://rail.cc/en/train/nice-to-rome Use the blue shopping cart links to book tickets.
Flo - that is short for Florian ;)

Hi Flo...thanks again...your information is very helpful....judging by what you say, I think it may be best to pre-purchase the Paris to Carcasonne, the Carc-Avignon tickets, and the Avignon to Marseilles/Nice.
If the rest of the trip can be done on local trains, I would probably prefer to do that, bc it gives me flexibilty to stop wherever....I'll do some research on all the stops along the line going south from Genoa, before we leave.
I definitely prefer to retain flexibility, if at all possible...it's just that I thought ticket prices will be so much more expensive, if I leave it till we actually need them....since September is not really the busy european holiday season as such, so do you think I will I need to arrange tickets a day or two beforehand, or would it be feasible to just rock up at the station on the day of travel?...cheers Peter...(since you're a photograher,I put a few pics on my photo page...don't know if you can see them?)

Yeah, pre-booking of the trips within France until you reach Nice is a good idea as regular fares for long distance trains in France are quite expensive.
However as you can do the remainder of the trip using local trains it is no problem to just purchase the tickets on the day. And if you want to cover a bit longer distance in Italy it wont hurt either to just buy a ticket for an Intercity train on the day.
For local trains you can always buy a ticket and hop on the train.
If you will use long distance trains in Italy it will be ok to purchase a few days in advance or even on the day, no problem.
Yeah, I can see the pics on your profile page - it seems as if you've been travelling quite a lot already. :)
