Hi!
Me and my friend are going for a three week interrail tour around Europe, starting in Budapest. This is our first time planning this kind of trip, and I would need a little help. This would be our route- in some cities we would just stop by for a day or a few hours, and in some we would stay a few days.
Budapest- Prague- Berlin- Amsterdam- Hague- Brussel- Paris- Barcelona- Marseille-Nice-Milan- Budapest
The first part of the trip till Brussel seems to be easy and managable without fees and supplements with day trains and a few changes. But Paris- Barcelona- Marseilles- Nice- Milan- Budapest seems to be much harder. We thought we'd take the Intercitiés de Nuit from Paris to Portbou and then change to a regional train to Barcelona. After that I've seen some options which require many changes. My question would be if someone has a recommendation for traveling south france, italy to Budapest? And also- where is it recommended to travel by night train, and are there trains where it's not compulsory to buy a reservation but recommended? How much and how should i pay for the french night train to Portbou? And if I arrive at a station in a city I've never seen before, will I be able to find the right train to the right direction?
Thanks for the answers in advance, I just became a little worried about the whole trip.

Hi.

Paris - Barcelona: https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/
Include the Petit Train Jaune - an amazing trip! :)
You will find the information about the night trains by following the links.
Otherwise here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train
Example Paris - Portbou, the one you asked for: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/paris-portbou-icn-3731/78

Barcelona - Nice: use the free local trains. You can also stop for example here: https://rail.cc/blog/scenic-train-cote-bleue/
Or in Marseille.
Schedule: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/barcelona-to-nice

Nice - Milan: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/nice-to-milan

The fastest way back to Budapest from Milan would be:
- day trip crossing the Alps (free and amazing): https://rail.cc/en/interrail/milan-to-zurich
- night train Zurich to Budapest: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/zurich-budapest-en-60467/177

Of course there are as well other ways back... via Venice, Lake Bled, Ljubljana, Zagreb, ...

More railcc schedules with Interrail information: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
Night train information: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train

And please help us to help you with the information on railcc - buy your official Interrail pass on the recommended website: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] - as it is not fair to ask at railcc for support and buy somewhere else. Thank you!

Peter :)

If you _need_ to get a certain train it is wise to get a reservation in advance. You can never tell whether a (night) train will be full on a certain day or not.
If you click on the links above you will see whether a reservation is compulsory or not. On certain connections, such as IC trains in Italy and long distance trains in Norway, a reservation is recommended - and it is written in the details of the connection.

Morning guys, thought id just chip in here, because your route is looking very similar to one I have spent the last week looking up myself.

Paris > Barcelona > Monaco > Milan (Rome / Florence) > Ljubjana (Lake Bled) > Budapest > Wein > Munich > Amsterdam and then back home to Northern Ireland.

It seems a pretty promising route and most of the posts on here talk about must do things like the small yellow railway from Paris to Barca etc. Im just torn between doing it in Sept (only chance ill get) for 22 days or putting it off to next year and doing it mid summer when the weather would be theoretically better, and id have a bigger group to go with who can save.

Just to add to the above, one of the most appealing things was the one way flights by Easy Jet

Belfast to Paris in Sept for £40
Amsterdam to Belfast end of Sept £30

Coupled with a 22 day £350 IR Ticket seems very good value.
