Hi all! Me and my boyfriend are planning 2 go interrailing in the summer and im just wonderin about the hostels. Is it best to book in advance or will there always be places available? Are there hostels close to most of the train stations? And are they relatively safe? Sorry to ask so many questions at once! We were also considering bringin a tent along and camping but Im not fond of the idea of carrying it. Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated

Hi there,

The hostels, especially in popular destinations, can be very busy in summer so it is best to book at least some of them in advance. Some of them will have vacancies even if you book just a day or two ahead but I recommend not just turning up somewhere after a long train journey and then looking for a bed. Some hostels are safer than others and have lockers for your rucksack and stuff. Take a small padlock with you so that you can make sure to keep your things locked up when you can. Last year, in Berlin, there were no lockers and I had to lock my rucksack on to my bed! Hostel booking web sites have feedback from users which might help you decide on which to choose.

Many of the hostels ARE in the centre of towns. And you can check by putting the address into Google Earth which will show you exactly where the hostel is and how close it is to the railway station and beach, etc. Camping grounds often have tents already set up and which are cheaper than hostels. Best to contact in advance I think. Hope this is helpful to you. Have an excellent trip.
