Hi there,

I am planning my Interrail trip for this summer, and have most of it sorted. The only part of the journey I would like advice with is travelling from Rome to Barcelona. Because this is such a long journey, I would prefer to break it into a few day trips, and also to enjoy the coastal train route.

I will be leaving Rome on Tuesday 6th August, as early as necessary, and would prefer to be arriving in Barcelona on Friday 9th August. So that leaves Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to visit a few sites, or go to the beach.

I have a few ideas. One place I would like to see is the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and also maybe Cannes for a picture on the red carpet (although open to suggestions). A day relaxing on the beach in the south of France would be nice though, although I don't really know the area very well so maybe someone might suggest a nice place. Any suggestions of possible routes would be great, and also some good (and cheap) youth hostels for me and my friend.

Finally, as mentioned, I would like to enjoy the views travelling through Italy and around the south of France, however, I wouldn't mind getting a night train into Barcelona for the last part of the journey to save some time.

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. This will be my first Interrail so it is all new to me :) Be nice to hear some of your experiences of this journey.

Thanks,
Martyn

Hi Martyn.
Unfortunately there is no night train on this route.
I recommend to travel along the coast with a break in Pisa: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/rome-to-nice9
It's no problem to start in the morning from Rome, have the break in Pisa (2 hours) and then to continue to Nice (France).
Stay overnight in Nice - and the next day you could have some day trips to for example Cannes or surrounding beaches.
Interesting as well: https://rail.cc/blog/scenic-train-cote-bleue/
From Nice you can continue to Perpignan. Stay there overnight and start in the morning to cross the Pyrenees by Little Yellow Train: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/villefranche-de-conflent-to-latour-de-carol

Train connections you need are here: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
And you can travel it free of extra fees. If you use an IC train in Italy, I recommend the reservation for EUR 3, available at ticket machines in Italian stations (option: Global Pass).

If you want to travel Rome to Barcelona the fast way, think about using the ferry: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/rome-to-barcelona

And please help us to help you with the information on railcc - buy your official Interrail pass via our partner link [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] . As it is not fair to ask at railcc for support and buy somewhere else. Thank you! :)

Peter :)

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the advice. Great information!

The Wild Camping article about the south of France looks amazing and made me even more excited to go now.

And the little yellow train looks great too. Will definitely travel on that.

Thanks again,

Martyn
