Pocket/swiss army knife

I'm flying to my first destination (and from my last destination). Where is the best place to keep a pocket knife, for security measures?

I'm assuming I'll need to check my backpack (although I'm going to ask about carrying it on with me), is it best putting it in their as hold luggage, or keeping it on me as hand luggage?
