in Western European countries, which countries really check id when purchasing tickets with eurorail pass and/or check t on the train?
Realistically when would ID be needed?

Hi.
Why you ask this questions - as it sounds strange to me.
If you travel with a rail pass you need to have your passport or ID-card with you.
