Should I be buying travel insurance and, if so, any suggestions on where from? :)

yes, you should. all the standard equipment quickly adds up to 500e+, and its only about 30e for a year worth of insurance. i got my insurance at the anwb (the Dutch road service) but you can get it at practically any bank too.
what country are you from?
and well it also depends on where you plan to travel (eg Scandinavia is safer than Eastern Europe) and whether you plan on sleeping in hostels/hotels or on campings/trains.

Ah, thank you! I'm from England, but will (hopefully) be starting the journey in Northern Italy.
