I'm considering the following route:
Fly out to Berlin
Prague
Budapest
Belgrade
Sarajavo
train to ploce then bus to Dubrovnik
Split
Ljubljana
Possibly with Krakow after Prague and Zagreb after Split.
I have a number of questions:
1) Is this route feasible in 21 days?
2) What would you alter about it?
3) Is it necessary to book any of the trains on this route?
4) Is it worth buying an interrail pass for this route or would it be cheaper to buy as I go
5) Is it necessary to join the YHA or book hostels in advance?
Thanks

Hi!
In my opinion the only IR ticket that would make sense is the 5in10 flexi pass; but you would then need to adapt your route a little in order to fit in the 5 journeys that the IR ticket can cover at the beginning and end with the trips where you need a bus/which are cheap to do with regular tickets.
Do you have to end up in Ljubljana due to your flight back home?
A possible route would be (with a 5in10): Berlin - Prague - night train to Krakow - night train to Budapest; then it is a bit tricky...:
- There are no trains Belgrad - Sarajevo, you would have to use a bus or criss-cross a bit and travel to Sarajevo from Zagreb
- There are cheap special fare offers for both Budapest - Belgrade as well Belgrade - Zagreb/Ljubljana, which would be cheaper than a InterRail travel day - but I think IR is still worth since you can save money on the first part of your trip.
So, you might travel from Budapest to Zagreb first, then with the last travel day of the 5in10 to Belgrade. From Belgrade by bus to Sarajevo, then Ploce - Dubrovnik - Ljubljana. From Dubrovnik to Ljubljana you would have to possibility to travel with the coastal ferry, running two days a week via Split: https://rail.cc/en/train/dubrovnik-to-rijeka
This way you would make the best use out of the 5in10 IR ticket. If you dont care about losing flexibility it might be cheaper to use advance fare tickets for the first part of the trip until Budapest but as far as I know you cant get them for the Krakow - Budapest trip online so...probably no good idea. ;)
Help us helping you and get your IR pass (if you choose to travel with IR) in our online shop at [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux] - thank you. :)

Thanks for your reply
Don't have to fly back from Ljubljana, it just seems the natural ending point to me but feel free to suggest alternatives.
The 5 in 10 pass for the first 6 cities seems a bit rushed, that works out at under 2 days in each cities and I was hoping to spend longer in some. If not booked in advance how much are point to point tickets likely to be on the first leg of this route?
I'll probably get the bus from Belgrade - Sarajavo

Hi.
You fly to Berlin, you stay there for 3 days and then you start interrailing - the same with the ending point/city of the 5 in 10. So it is relaxed. :)
If you want to check prices for point to point tickets, pleas have a look at the schedules and follow the blue shopping cart - as prices may vary from date to date.
Example Berlin to Prague: https://rail.cc/en/train/berlin-to-prague
... and so on ...
Peter :)

Ok so here's where I'm at:
Flight to Berlin is booked to arrive at about 9am on 09/07/13
arrive in Prague 13/07/13
Krakow 16/07/13
Budapest 19/07/13
Sarajavo 22/07/13
Dubrovnik 25/07/13
ferry to split arrving on 28/07/13
Ljubljana 31/07/13
Flight home from Ljubljana on 02/08
The 5 in 10 pass would be activated on the 13/07 and therefore expire on the 23/07
Is there anything that could be improved about this trip? Is it too rushed/too slow? Am I missing any great cities or planning on spending too long in fairly dull ones?
I have currently ditched Belgrade since it seems so hard to get to/from there but if you have a suggestion about this feel free to let me know.
Thanks

Hi!
Looks good, however you will have to add one night in Zagreb on your way to Sarajevo as there is no direct train Budapest - Sarajevo.
Your only option by train:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail/budapest-to-zagreb
https://rail.cc/en/interrail/zagreb-to-sarajevo
So you will use have used all your travel days when you reach Sarajevo; then get a regular ticket to go to Ploce via Mostar (by train), from there you can take a bus to Dubrovnik.
Belgrade indeed is awkward to include...maybe it works on a later trip. ;)
