Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help.

I know there have been some problems with flooding across Europe. We are currently interrailing through Italy but will soon be arriving in the northern part of the continent. How would we check to see if our trains are affected by the problems?

We go from Vienna to Budapest on Sunday morning, Budapest to Berlin overnight on Tuesday (overnight and passing through Dresden and Prague).

What should we do if our trains are affected?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Will

Hi Will,

how do you get to Vienna? This route should not be affected but I'd like to check anyway.
The Vienna - Budapest service currently is not affected and should run as normal, as the tracks do not follow the Danube except for short stretches.
Budapest - Berlin services currently are diverted in Czech Republic and delays between 60-120 minutes are to be expected. The floods on Vltava and Elbe should be past their max, and the tracks between Prague and Dresden are currently open but there still seems the possibility of closure at short notice.

We travel from Venice Mestre this evening at 21:09 arriving in Westbahnhof at 8:08.

My main concern was Budapest Keleti to Berlin Hauptbahnhpf on 11/06 departing at 20:05 as this train is scheduled to pass through Prague and Dresden. So long as the train is still running despite some alterations to route I am happy. Will the departure time be affected?

I will keep an eye on those websites, thanks very much for your assistance!

Well, the floods have passed both Prague and Dresden so this route should not be affected - from Dresden to Berlin the tracks do not follow the Elbe valley anymore.
More of a concern could be the Danube, the floods should reach Budapest this weekend; part of the route to Bratislava follow the river and might be affected - check the MAV link especially for any infos.

The Venice - Wien journey wont be affected; why do you enter the train at Mestre?

Our accommodation is out of Vienna and closer to Mestre!

I will keep and eye on that website.

Thanks again!

OK, currently there are replacement buses operating between Györ and Tatabanya on the Wien - Budapest line as the short stretches where the Danube comes really close the the tracks are currently affected by the floods.
Depending on how high the water of the Danube will actually get the tracks to Sturovo (on the line to Bratislava - Praha) could be affected as well in the next days.

Thanks for this. We were supposed to get the train this morning. We are checking with Wien WBH to see what they suggest we do.

Managed to arrive in Budapest after a bus transfer and a replacement local service train from Tatabanya. Not the most enjoyable journey but at least we made it in the end.

Are there still problems between Budapest and Berlin that we ought to be concerned about? With this being an overnight train (the EuroNight 476) on 11/06 will we have to make changes through the night?

Well, as mentioned before the tracks follow the Danube from Budapest until Sturovo in Slovakia: www.bueker.net/trainspotting/maps/hungary/hungary.gif
However no disruptions are yet announced on [ux]http://www.mav-start.hu/hirek/hir.php?mid=151ac518e60e8f[/ux] and since even the night trains Budapest - München/Zürich are currently diverted via that route you might be lucky and travel all the way without disruptions. In Czech Republic the train might still be diverted but that should not affect your journey apart from a possible delay.

Hi friends

Last night the Munich to Budapest train ran OK but used the route through Bratislava and Sturovo. It was just under 2 hours late in arriving at Budapest, so this may affect some connections.

At Munich this seemed to be displayed in the DB notice boards, but as my German is non-existent I couldn't really tell what the details were. I also got the message that until today 19 June all day trains were affected innsomevway but night trains were getting through.

Cheers

Richard
