We want to take a night train (EuroNight) from Vienna to Ljubljana over summer. The problem is we can't find information on how much it would cost to reserve a seat on the train (departs 22.40 and arrives 5.59 with one transfer in between).

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Hi!

Vienna - Salzburg: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/vienna-zurich-en-466/64
Salzburg - Ljubljana: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/munich-zagreb-en-499/151

Seat reservation is not compulsory on both trains! To support railcc, purchase your InterRail passes via our partner link [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you! :)

Thank you,

I'm slightly confused because DB Bahn has the night train listed as needing a compulsory reservation, but if we were to reserve seats on both trains it would only cost us 10 euros overnight anyway? Would it also be useful to reserve a seat just in case the train was sold out?

We'll be sure to book our tickets through railcc!

Yeah, the Munich - Zagreb night train is a bit problematic...for travel to/from Germany, the train has compulsory reservation; however within Austria and within Slovenia it has not (there are no trains in Austria with compulsory reservation and only a few ICS trains in Slovenia) as you can see in the detailed schedules here:
http://www.oebb.at/de/Reiseplanung/Fahrplanauskunft/Fahrplanbilder/Detail_220/kif220_13.pdf
http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/uploads/vozni-redi-po-relacijah-2013-1/04_ljubljana_jesenice_ljubljana.pdf
Reservation is also compulsory for travel to/from Croatia...but as you can see in the official timetables, reservation is not compulsory within Austria and Slovenia, even if the online schedules say different. I have also heard several reports about travellers without reservation on the section between Austria and Slovenia - no problems.

Of course you could purchase a reservation but I think it is not necessary. If you get one, I would be really curious what would happen if you didnt show it to the conductor...I wonder if he would ask for one or not... ;)

Anyway, I really doubt that you wont find a place on the train to Salzburg and for the train to Ljubljana...I dont think it will be full as well - but if you want to be sure, get a reservation at the station in Vienna.

Alright, I will try to inquire this issue further but just keep on planning your route with this connection - and get the reservations if you want to guarantee a seat. ;)

Hey,

I got new informations.
Apparently a reservation is needed for the Salzburg - Ljubljana train unless you are travelling only within Austria. For the Wien - Salzburg train no reservation is required (only when using this train on an international journey).
So, to be safe I would now recommend to get a reservation Salzburg - Ljubljana. ;)
