Hi everyone!
I'm going on my first interrail in about two weeks and one of the first places I'm gonna visit is Athens (from Istanbul via Thessaloniki).. However, I really want to visit Rhodes OR Santorini (from Athens) also, but is it too difficult or too expensive to go there (regarding transport) and just a waste of time? How much does the ferrys costs? And do InterRailers get any discount on ticket? And how long does the trip takes?

I really hope I can get some help! :)
Have a nice day!

Hi!

What is your overall planned route?

You know that there is no international rail service to/from Greece at the moment? Which would make going into Greece from Istanbul a bit more difficult than maybe expected...

Bluestar Ferries grant a 30% discount on their routes from Piraeus to Dodecanese (for Rhodes) and Cyclades (for Santorini), check their website for fares and timings. :arr: http://www.bluestarferries.gr/site/content.asp?sel=&loc=2
This discount is only available if you also book a passage on a Bluestar Ferries/Superfast Ferries route across the Adriatic.

Hi flo!
Thanks for the quick answer! I know about the international rail service to/from Greece, I've read alot about it. I start in Istanbul, then take a night-bus to Thessaloniki and then either and IC train or a no-supplement-train to Athens... Isn't that correct?

What do you mean with that you need to book a passage on the Bluestar Ferries/Superfast Ferries? If I book a route from Pieraeus to Santorini, isn't that the same as booking a passage, and then I get the 30% discount? Or are we talking about a whole other kind of passage? :)

Plus: I think I will be in Ahtens from may 20th in a couple of days and then heading for an island - can I buy the ticket at the ferry station or where will I do it? And do I need to do it in advance, you think?

Thanks again for the help!

Amalie :)

Hej,

so when do you want to activate your IR pass? In Thessaloniki?
Like I said the discount only applies when you also book a trip across the Adriatic (eg from Patras to Bari or Ancona) with Superfast Ferries as well.

In my opinion you should not spend too much time in Greece to make best use of your IR pass.

Hi again

Okay thanks :)
But I still didn't get the answer to whether I could buy the ticket at the ferry station or where I will have to do it? And if I need to do it in advance?
And I know about the trains in Greece, but I've never been there, and it's a one time opportunity so I really want to go there anyways. :)

Regards, Amalie

You can call +30 210 4145700 or mail booking@minoan.gr to get your reservation for the trip across the Adriatic; call +30 210 891 9800 or mail helpdesk@attica-group.com to get a reservation for the trip to the Islands. I assume you could also get a ticket for the ferries to Rhodes/Santorini at a ticket office at the port of Piraeus but I havent been travelling yet myself in that area so can only give you this info.
