Hey, so I'm going to a music festival in Croatia starting on the 1st of June and will be getting an InterRail pass to make my way down from Amsterdam.
I get to Amsterdam on the 22nd of June and plan on stopping at:
[list:v5l9kycc] Paris (2 days)
South of France (Probably Monaco 1-2 days)
Venice (2 days)
[/list:u:v5l9kycc]
So basically:
[list:v5l9kycc]Amsterdam: 22-23rd
Paris: 24-25th
Monaco: 26-27th
Venice: 28-29th
[/list:u:v5l9kycc]
Now I think this should be ok timewise, Amsterdam to Paris and Paris to Monaco (or Nice for example) trains are fairly quick but the problem is Monaco to Venice and Venice to Croatia.
Using the BAHN web site I get journeys starting at 18:51 hours!! If I look at the interrail map It says Nice-Milano- 5:10 hours travel time? Am I doing something wrong here?
Similar thing with getting from Venice to anywhere in Croatia, like Split for example.
Any advice on different routes?
Comments on the trip in general also welcome.
Thanks!
Peter

Hi.
Just use the railcc map, where you find the numbers to the connections: https://rail.cc/en/maps
And here on railcc we use beside the railcc schedules, the railcc-Bahn version of the electronic schedule planer: [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux]
On Amsterdam to Paris pay attention not to use the expensive THALYS train - use free trains: https://rail.cc/en/train/amsterdam-to-paris
Here a blog post for the half of the route: https://rail.cc/blog/amsterdam-brussels-train/
Paris to Nice by overnight train: https://rail.cc/en/train/paris-to-nice
Nice via Monaco and Ventimiglia to Milan: https://rail.cc/en/train/nice-to-milan
Milan to Venice: https://rail.cc/en/train/milan-to-venice
Venice to Ljubljana (think about a stop at Lake Bled): https://rail.cc/en/train/venice-to-ljubljana
Border crossing is this way: https://rail.cc/blog/travel-lake-bled-train/
Ljubljana to Zagreb: https://rail.cc/en/train/ljubljana-to-zagreb
And there you are in Croatia.
Please support railcc:
- buy your official rail passes and tickets on the recommended website: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
- add locations of your home-town (bars, nice places, ...)
Thank you! :)

Hi!
The reason why you find such long journey times is that the updated timings for the summer have not been yet supplied to the timetable database used by the online schedule planners. If you are looking for timings for instance at [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] use a date prior to 9th June. And, as Peter mentioned check the connections recommended by railcc as well. :)

Hey,
I'm finding it a bit hard to get to my destination in Croatia, Novalja.
So far following the railcc links I'm planning on doing something like this:
Amsterdam: arrive 22nd 9.30am
depart 23rd 12.30pm
Paris: arrive 23rd 9.30pm
depart 25th 10.00pm
Nice: arrive 26th 9.00am
depart 26th 9.55am
Monaco: arrive 26th 10.17am
depart 27th 18.19pm
Milan: arrive 27th 22.50pm
depart 28th 07.25am
Venice: arrive 28th 10.56am
depart 29th or 30th
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: Note that the stop at Milan is not meant to be a travel stop it would be a sleeping stop but I'd much rather get an overnight train Nice - Venice instead of having to stop at Milan. Any alternatives?
From here I don't know what the best way to get to Novalja (near Zadar) is
Maybe I could go to Rijeka and get a catamaran or a bus down to Novalja but the Venice - Rijeka route goes through Ljubljana and seems to be very limited (1 per day) getting there at an awkward time that doesn't coincide with boat/bus schedules.
On [ux]https://plan.rail.cc[/ux] there seems to be an overnight train leaving Venice at 20:57 and arriving at Rijeka at 9:20. Would this be an option?
Do you know any alternatives?
Do you think a 5 days travel interrail ticket within 10 days is enough for this?
Also another thing I'm not being able to do is reserve the seats/beds how do I do that? And how do I pay charges in advance if there are any?
Thanks a lot!
Roberto

Hi.
If you want to travel by train then do it this way:
Venice - border crossing to Slovenia: https://rail.cc/blog/travel-lake-bled-train/
If you like, add a stop at Lake Bled, much nicer than Venice. :)
https://rail.cc/en/interrail/venice-to-ljubljana
Ljubljana - Zagreb: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/ljubljana-to-zagreb
Zagreb - Zadar: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/zagreb-to-zadar
Local transport to Novalja.

The Venezia - Rijeka connection is with a change of trains in the middle of the night in Villach and requiring seat reservations, I would not recommend it.
With your current plans you only have one day left to get from Venezia to Zadar which is not possible I think. Since you seem to plan only a nights stopover in Milano I would travel from Monaco to Venice in one go using just one travel day and leaving you with two travel days to make your way to Zadar which should be possible.

Ok, that's cool, thanks.
I might just go Ljubljana to Rijeka and then get a boat to Novalja. Maybe stop at Lake Bled if I have enough travel days.
How do I reserve seats, Thallys or over night trains
For example if I want to get an overnight train https://rail.cc/en/train/paris-to-nice do I need to book it in advance?
Or if I want a Thallys train to Paris? https://rail.cc/en/train/amsterdam-to-paris
I've already bought the interrail pass (through railcc :D ) so I just want to pay the extras, the links on the connection page seem to be the full thing?

Hi Roberto.
Thanks for supporting! :)
Paris - Nice night train: you can try to get it here in the railcc shop - [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux] OR buy it at a station (not possible in the UK).
Amsterdam - Paris: do you really want to go by Thalys and spent EUR 39 reservation fee per person? IF not, have a look on the free connections (slower, but you save a lot of money!) - [ux]https://rail.cc/en/interrail/amsterdam-to-paris
If you want to book a reservation for Thalys, do it as well in the railcc shop [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux] OR call them.

Thanks Peter,
I'm still deciding wether to get a Thallys or not. The thing is I've got about 8 days travelling and getting the free train from Amsterdam to Paris would take pretty much a full day. So I'm weighing my options it's a Time/Money trade off.
Just have to decide if the 39EUR are worth the full/half day.
Happy to support.
Thanks again
Peter

You are right - Thalys will save you travel time. Maybe think about the medium solution ... by free trains until Lille and from there by TGV train to Paris - see as well at the link I gave you. :)
