I just have one question which I cannot seem to find a definitive answer to and was hoping someone might be able to help.

I'm sure I read somewhere that if I had a One Country InterRail Pass I could use it to cross borders as long as it was valid in one of the countries whose borders I crossed. Is that true?

My hope was that I could by a Portuguese InterRail pass to travel around Portugal, but then also use it to only pay the InterRail supplement to get the night train from Madrid to Lisbon and back. Do you know whether this is a possibility?

I sincerely appreciate any response you could give me and thank you for your time. :D

Hi!

In general, the different One Country Passes are only valid until the border of each country. However, there are several trains (for instance TGV Lyria, Thalys, Elipsos) that offer a special fare (often called Pass 2) for travellers which only have InterRail tickets that cover parts of their journey (eg with a OC Pass for France you could use a Thalys train to Bruxelles with the Pass 2 offer).

I think that such kind of reservation (which is a bit more expensive than the regular one) is also available at least on the Lusitania - but I am not 100% sure. ;)
Anyway, since you are >26 I would recommend to first check regular prices for train routes in Portugal on rail.shop/cp - since tickets are rather cheap in Portugal even when bought on the day you might be off cheaper than with the OC pass.
For the night train from/to Madrid then get regular tickets bought in advance - if that fits you travel plans. :)

Hello,

I thought to borrow this thread.

Me and my girlfriend bought one country passes (3 days of travelling) for Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia. We were struggling between the 22/10 day ticket and four one country passes but in Finland we were advised to get separete one country passes for each country.

So, We have already bought four separate passes and now we have realized that it might not be possible to use those four one country passes to travel from one country to another (eg from Prague to Budapest).

At the moment we are in Krakow. Our route includes Prague, Budapest, Ljubljana and Bled in addition to Krakow. How should we continue from this point, do we need to pay tons of extra fees because of buying the one country passes since there are Slovakia and Austria in between of Prague and Budapest?

Any help is most welcome, cheers.

Hi!

You should have asked first here - then we could have helped you more than VR office...

Dont travel through Austria it will be too expensive. Buy a ticket Kuty (Gr) - Szob (Gr) at a Czech station, it covers the stretch through Slovakia and will be 29,20€. Then you can use the through Eurocity trains to Budapest via Bratislava.

You will also have troubles getting into Slovenia since the direct Budapest - Ljubljana train runs through Croatia. You should make your way along Szekesfehervar - Zalaegersezg - Hodos - Pragersko. Attention only a few connections per day.
