Hi,
Thinking of travelling the above route in July 2013. Getting a 5 in 10 pass to fly into Krakow and activate the pass to then spend two days in each location and finishing in Salzburg where family lives. Will this be sufficient and is there anywhere in particular worth a visit on this route? We are also aiming to get mostly night trains, are reservations needed on most?

Thanks :)

Hi!

Krakow - Prague: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/krakow-prague-en-402/149
Prague - Vienna: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/berlin-vienna-en-40477/46 Seat reservation not required (but recommended during peak summer season)
Vienna - Zagreb: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/vienna-to-zagreb
Zagreb - Bled: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/zagreb-to-ljubljana All trains continue to Lesce Bled after Ljubljana, travel time ~45min; a change of trains in Ljubljana is only necessary with the 0725 connection.
Bled - Salzburg: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/ljubljana-to-munich Click each connection to check for Bled and Salzburg timings

Between Vienna and Zagreb you make a stopover in Graz; between Zagreb and Beld in Ljubljana.

Thank you. :)

Thanks for your help Flo!
Planning dates at the minute, is the 5 in 10 rail pass enough for this route?
I'm also about to buy the interrail ticket on this site, is the first date of travel set in stone?

Hopefully thinking the following plan:
Fly to Prague on 23rd July
Night Train to Krakow on the 24th evening. However, I know it stops in Auschwitz so is it worth getting the day train to stop here? Or better to get a train/bus out on the 25th as it is still a travel day?
Then Night Train to Vienna on the 26th evening.
Then on to Zagreb on the 28th or 29th of July. I've heard this is a very scenic train and better for during the day?
Then short day trains to both Bled and on to Salzburg in the last few days.

Does this sound suitable or would we need to stay in some places for longer?

Thanks,
Lisa :)

Hej Lisa!

You can use the 5in10 for this route, yes, as long as you are a bit careful with your travel days. ;)

So you are flying into Prague now? Why not staying longer there, just one day is quite short. Alright...you have to be careful to use only one travel day for each leg. If you want to make a stopover in Oswiecim/Auschwitz you would either have to use the night train Prague - Krakow and get off very early at Oswiecim, then continue to Krakow in the evening. To make a stopover in Oswiecim using a day train from Prague wont make much sense as you would have to change trains plus wont have much time in Auschwitz.

Krakow - Wien: The night train is a good option but keep in mind that it only has couchette and sleeper accomodation, no regular seats. If you want, you could also take the night train to Budapest, have a quick look around and go to Vienna in the afternoon/evening.

Wien - Zagreb: This is the scenic Semmering route, UNESCO world heritage. Sit on the left hand side; of interest is the part between Wiener Neustadt and Mürzzuschlag about one hour away from Vienna. If you want, take an early train to Graz and continue to Zagreb in the evening.

Zagreb - Bled is easy (as I explained in my previous post); Bled - Salzburg via Tauernstrecke again is a scenic mountain railway.

So maybe like this:

1 Prague and night train to Krakow
2x Krakow
3 Krakow and night train to Budapest
4x Budapest and to Vienna in the afternoon/evening
5 Vienna
6x Vienna (- Graz) - Zagreb
7 Zagreb
8x Zagreb - Bled
9 Bled
10x Bled - Salzburg
