Me and a friend are beginning our interrail in Istanbul and are planning to head for Croatia. However we have a few days spare and would like to stop off at some of the cities between Istanbul and Dubrovnik. We were thinking Sofia in Bulgaria. Can anyone recommend anywhere else that's particularly worth visiting?

If you want to reach Montenegro by train, you have to go to Belgrade, first, because the only train line in Montnegro runs from Belgrade to Bar and vice versa. So, you could spend another day visiting Belgrade, then take the day train. There is also a night train, but the route is said to be scenic and very beautiful. From Bar or Budva on the coast, you have to take busses, because there are no train lines. The busses are said to be cheap and running a few times per day. You will have to change a few times, because there seem to be no direct lines. The first train station on that route will be Split. Once you are there, you should take a ferry or catamaran, and visit some of the many islands.

Hi.
Like Tom already wrote, you could travel:

Istanbul - Plovdiv - Sofia - Belgrad. Here the travel report of Flow in the reverse direction but with all the information you need: https://rail.cc/blog/bucharest-sofia-istanbul-train/

Then Belgrade - Montenegro: use the scenic day train - https://rail.cc/en/train/belgrade-to-bar
Travel for example until Bar (https://rail.cc/en/bar/c) at the sea.

From Bar back to Podgorica: https://rail.cc/en/train/bar-to-podgorica

Then you can add some stops along the coast but here is the direct connection to Croatia (Dubrovnik): https://rail.cc/en/train/podgorica-to-dubrovnik

Dubrovnik to Split: where you can get back on the rail tracks - https://rail.cc/en/train/dubrovnik-to-split
