Hi Richard,

I checked yesterday and it wasnt possible to get the reservation online on railcc. However I think the only moreorless reasonable way to get your reservation would be to phone up DB or ÖBB and order your reservation there - I am not 100% sure if they ship to Australia, otherwise you can collect the reservation at a station as well.
Pre booking for domestic CFR trains starts only 30 days in advance.

Thanks for the info. Like your new photo BTW - very suave 8) .
I have tried to phone DBahn but time difference and language difficulties (unfortunately I don't speak any German) have so far foiled my attempts. But there is still time :!:
The good news is that I have now been able to reserve sleeper accommodation on 21 night trains and 4 overnight ferries so I am assured of a bed for almost the whole of my first month (all except Timisoara Nord to Bucuresti Nord) and will get to 22 capital cities for a day plus three others. :D I think I will have to leave the Balkans bookings until I get to Europe and can go to a railway station.
Hope I can stand the pace, but there will be many good coffee shops if I need a break and an opportunity to talk to local people in addition to train travellers :D

I am still somewhat unhappy about having a change of trains in both directions...it'd be more convenient to take the direct night train to Bucharest I think, however arriving at 1230 probably is too late for you...do you plan to spend more time in Budapest after arring there on 2nd June? Since you only have a few hours in Budapest on 31st May and Budapest in my opinion is more interesting than Bucharest.

Anyway it looks like you are almost ready to go! Just great...and enviable! :D

Hej Flo

I have made a number of adjustments since I sent you my earlier Itinerary (Draft 5, I think). I have juggled some of the central European journeys to avoid significant track-works/delays/cancellations. I am now on Draft 7.
All the cities are still there but in a different order! I will now be in Budapest on 5 June, Bucharest on 6 June and back in Budapest on 7 June.

So I have decided to stick with:
Budapest-Keleti-Timisoara Nord, Timisoara Nord-Bucuresti Nord Gara A
for the“outward” journey to gain a bit of time in Bucharest, but to take the direct:
EN 427 Bucuresti Nord Gara A dep 17:40 to Budapest-Keleti arr 08:50 (next day)
for the return. This will still give me almost 10.5 hours in Bucharest and, as you suggest, avoids a broken journey on the way back.

I will be returning to Budapest for another 4 hours 20 min (making a total of almost 19 hours - all in daylight) on 19 June as part of my “pseudo-Orient Express” trip:
London-Paris-Munich-Budapest-Belgrade-Sofia-Istanbul.

I hope this all makes sense.

Yes, the Itinerary planning part is almost finished. I am now packing my back-pack to see just how much I can fit into (or have to leave out of) the 7kg carry-on baggage allowace that Finnair will let me take on the plane. I figured that as I will only be able to manage what I can carry on the trains, I might as well start with the plane (so no checked baggage).

Thanks for you suggestions and hints, they are most helpful.

Hi Flo

It has taken me quite a while to prepare, particularly when Timetables were not available or were being changed during the process. ;)

I was able to make all the CNL and some other trips starting or finishing in Germany on the railcc-DBahn website. Very simple when you get used to the process. :D :D

Since posting the Itinerary I have discovered one error. The trip on 31.05.13 should read:
