Has anyone yet come across a cheap way of using their mobile phone for data whilst interrailing? I know there is free wifi in lots of places these days, and I will probably be relying on that and internet cafes for the most part on my trip, but just thought I would ask about roaming out of interest.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi,
it depends on your carrier. Mine is Vodafone and I can add an option Reiseflat Data which allows me to use the bandwidth and the volume of my home country in every country, where Vodafone has its network. So I have a flat rate in Ireland, UK, Netherlands, Spain, Italy,... just for 6€ per month.
But mostly carriers allow you to buy 50/100 MB per week for 5-15€ or day packages 25MB/day for 2€. It's great, e.g. on a night train or long distance rides, but I think it's not necessary. As you mentioned you'll have an internet connection in hostels/hostels and many public hotspots. It's great to have navigation on your mobile phone, but you can also use an offline service, which might be cheaper and faster :)
