Hi Guys,

Route: Bergen - Oslo - Gothenburg - Copenhagen - Stockholm - Helsinki - Baltic

Its been a while since I've been on this forum and travelled using interrail. I'm hoping to do a Scandinavian interrailing trip this summer with a few other countries with the following route for about 3 weeks :)
Bergen-Oslo-Gothenburg-Copenhagen-Stockholm-Helsinki-Talinn-Riga- Kaunas

For the above route I'm thinking of buying the Global 15 day continuous pass then for baltic states just buy bus/train tickets as I go along as I think interrail can't be used here?

As usual I've looked around the brilliant forum and mainly looked at https://rail.cc/en/forum-rail-travel and https://rail.cc/en/countries.

So I was just wondering if you guys have any suggestions or advice on the route I'm planning to do :)

Thanks, Jerry

1. are you Brit? this as for the ''not valid in home country'' rules.
2. IR has never ever been valid in Baltics nor is likely to ever be. Plus that trains are far and few over there-but quite cheap (certainly with a Brit mindset)- BUS is the main form of cross border traffic though. Can be mega-amazing cheap if booked advance (from 1 or 3 eur/ride).
3. I highly doubt if that IR is worthwhile- 15 days is not cheap, and I do know that Scandi-rail also is not cheap. BUT if you can preplan and prebook-via nsb/sj then you can get very low fares-but are tied into those trips. SJ X2000 also runs in+out of Kobenhavn. (2 yrs ago I did Malmo-STO for just 99 SEK). In summer low advace fares abound there. Also depends if you plan to do many daytme sidetrips-or not. Also- if not a trainonly mindset- very cheap buses- try lavprisekspressen.
4.STO-HEL is either by direct boat (choose between Viking or Stena/Silja) and not incl in IR. YOu can use IR for the shorter ferry to TURKU and use VR=Fin train to HEL from there- a normal seat is free -pay extra for sleeper.

Hi Jerry,

the 15 days IR pass makes no sense - too expensive in general (for most people the 10in22 will do just fine) even more for your route!

Depending on how flexible you want to remain on your trip, I'd say you should go with a 5in10 that would cover the following trips:

Bergen - Oslo
Oslo - Gothenburg
Gothenburg - Copenhagen
Copenhagen - Stockholm
(Turku - Helsinki if you go by ferry Stockholm - Turku which is supposedly the more scenic route rather than the direct way to Helsinki) - if you want to go straight to Helsinki you would have a spare travel day which you could use for a day trip along your route.

Reservation (50 NOK) is recommended for Bergen - Oslo and needed for Snabbtag (fast train) Copenhagen - Stockholm (7€).
If you are willing to do the whole trip from Bergen to Helsinki within 10 days this is a good option.

Other option:
3 day One Country Pass Sweden that would cover the following trips:
Oslo - Gothenburg
Gothenburg - Malmö (the pass covers only direct SJ trains to Copehagen which means you would need an extra ticket from Malmö to Copenhagen for the Oresundtrain or a reservation for Malmö - Copenhagen SJ Snabbtag whichever is cheaper.
Copenhagen - Stockholm
You should still get the ferry discount for Stockholm - Helsinki; then you also need an extra ticket for Bergen - Oslo, have a look for Minipris at [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail[/ux] or NSB

In the Baltics, pay as you go.
