Hello.

Me and my mates are planning to go see the Tour de france stage at alpes D huez (which is quite close to Grenoble) during our interrail. Any suggestions about how to travel from Barcelona to Grenoble (or even closer to Alpes D huez)? The date of the stage is 18/7/2013, so we'd propably like to be in Grenoble at least a day before.

Hi!

Well...I think Grenoble is the best spot you could start your trip to L'Alpe d'Huez. There are rather frequent buses to Bourg d'Oisans and a rather less frequent service directly to L'Alpe d'Huez...have a look:

To get to Grenoble you have to travel along the Mediterranean coast via Girona - Portbou - Perpignan - Narbonne - Montpellier until you reach Avingon. From there you can travel to Valence, then directly to Grenoble. However, the line from Valence to Grenoble currently undergoes electrification which means you would have to use replacement buses (covered by InterRail of course).
If you want to stick with the train, you'd either have to go all the way up to Lyon, then back to Grenoble or via Marseille - both options probably are going to take more time but especially the route via Marseille - Veynes to Grenoble is quite scenic.
