I'm planning a big excursion with my family (US citizens: me + wife + 14 yr old + 11 yr old + 8 yr old) in August. Looking to travel from Rome to Bern, then Bern to Interlaken, then on to Zermatt and then Glacier Express (or alternative trains that would get us to St Moritz), then up to Paris (likely via a quick layover in Zurich).
We'll be taking trains the whole way - what's the best pass for us to get? What would the cost be?
Also, I'm open to suggestions on ways to simplify. The only reason we're considering Bern is I'm having a hard time finding a way to get from Rome to Interlaken. Are there other ways that would be feasible? I'm also considering skipping Zermatt - we want to do the Glacier Express route, but could skip if we can see most of the Glacier Express scenery by connecting through I'laken to Brig or something.
