Hi everyone!

We’re currently in the midst of planning an interrailing trip for the end of May, and have a few worries about a particular part of our journey around Italy and Croatia, which we would really appreciate your help with if possible! We will be travelling from Florence to Hvar Island, and then hopefully onto Budapest. We've got a few questions...

Is the only way from Split to Budapest the overnight train from Split to Zagreb, and then the day train to Budapest from there?

Does anyone have any experience of a) the ferry from Ancona to Split (the overnight one, as the day 3 hours ferry doesn’t start until late June) b) the overnight trains from Split to Zagreb?

Does anyone know where you can get reservations for these trains -does railcc do them? (As Raileur*pe can't) Would they be purchasable from Ancona? Or just worth booking when we arrive in Split.

Also (on a slightly separate note!) has anyone taken the overnight train from Copenhagen to Amsterdam, how quickly do seats get reserved on this train?

Thanks for any help in advance and for running such a helpful website!

If you´re taking blue-line ferries from ancona to split, book in advance. Blue-Lines has pretty good prices ( 40 Euros for the lowest categorie, air-seats on the lowest floor), and the vessel isn´t too crappy... I don´t know much about he Marco-Polo-Ferry, but Blue-Line is definatly a good choice.
About the Zargeb-Split train: Book in advance, i tried to book thetrain last year 2 days before departure and i was fully booked for the next 3 days.

Reminder: in these parts of this world trains are just a leftover nuisance from a century ago-most people go by bus-much faster, more often. That may explain the seeming lack of connections.
Ferries in LOW season are hardly ever full-plus there may be more as those listed in IR-brochures.
The 2 or 3 remaining DAYtime trains Spl-Zag are by RES (do locally, cannot do online) as these are special tilting things. For the overnite-it has 1 sleeper and 2-3 sitting cars (mainly for intermediate)- these can but do not need to be REServed.
The CNL Kobenhavn-Ams is NOT a train as such-it has several groups of wagons to any other placesin DE, for AMS it is just 1 car with (not very comfy-its an old rebuilt DDR-car) sits-part of it broken out for bikes etc, and 2-3 couchette cars-invest that money in a ly-down plank! Again: season and day of week say more as just full or not.

Many thanks for your responses to our questions Mr Monk & NLtrainer!

We had a look at the cost of the ferry on the day we wished to travel and decided that it was looking to be too expensive, so we think we're going to take the bus/train from Venice to Split see a bit of the countryside and make the most of our interrail pass. Slightly nervous that one of our connections may be delayed though causing issues further down our journey, but I suppose thats part of the fun!

Once again, thank you very much for getting back to me!
