Me and my friend are going interrailing for the first time in May, but are struggling to find out if there are direct routes between certain countries. Does anyone think that Bruges - Amsterdam - Prague - Crikvenica (croatia) - Venice - Rome - Florence - Genoa - Madrid would be possible? We are struggling with travel between Amsterdam and Prague, and then Prague and Croatia as the journeys are quite long. We have a 22 day pass with 10 days travel so don't want to waste time swapping between loads of different trains! Would we be able to get night trains or just swap once between these places? Could anyone with experience advice on this problem and general advice on interail? Thankyou! o)

Hi,
as you mentioned night trains are a possibility. I like them, because you save the money for a hostel and you are in a new city, when you wake up. From Amsterdam you can use a night train to Prague. You just need to buy a reservation. The prices are listed: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/amsterdam-prague-cnl457/15 buy your reservation at railcc or go to a local office of your railway company.
From Prague to Croatia you may add another stop, because the of the bad connections. Maybe you can add Munich :)
From there you can take an night train to Rijeka, which is close to the place, where you want to go.
Prague - Munich: https://rail.cc/en/train/prague-to-munich
Munich - Rijeka: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/munich-rijeka-en499/b481/275
Genoa - Madrid might be a bit difficult as well. Maybe you use a connection via Switzerland to get to Spain: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/nice-irun-icn-4730/141 where you can get a connection to Madrid.

Hi!

General information: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/first-time-interrail

Amsterdam - Prague: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/amsterdam-prague-cnl457/15

Prague - Rijeka (for Crikvenica): Well...there is a direct Prague - Split night train in summer, but only running on Tuesdays and Fridays: :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/prague-split-ec277/g1204//377
However, this is not perfect for you as the overnight run is from Zagreb to Split which does not help you much because Rijeka is much closer to Zagreb than to Split. So, I would just travel with the regular Prague - Budapest night train, then Budapest - Zagreb, spend a night in Zagreb and continue to Rijeka the following morning. If you follow the first link above you will see how to get to the timings of each train connection.

Rijeka - Venice: Another quite complicated trip as there is no train service on the SI <> IT border at the moment. So, first go to Ljubljana, then work your way across the border at Nova Gorica/Gorizia. It is a day trip...but really nice if done one a hot summers day.

Venice - Florence - Roma - Genoa is easy. Remember that all Frecce (Frecciabianca, Frecciargento, Frecciarossa; the Italian high speed trains) require a 10€ reservation with InterRail which you can easily get at the ticket machines at the stations. You will encounter these trains on all these legs. Alternatively you can also go by slower IC trains (3€ reservation recommended).

Genoa - Madrid is quite complicated again. You might consider the Livorno/Civitavecchia - Barcelona ferry :arr: https://rail.cc/en/civitavecchia/ferry/c :arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-ferry/livorno-barcelona/24
Alternatively, you can go from Genoa along the Mediterranean coast via Ventimiglia - Nice to Marseille, stay one night, then continue via Nimes - Narbonne - Portbou - Barcelona and maybe get the last train to Madrid or stay one night and continue the next day.
