Hi all,

We are planning travel around Europe from the last weekend in April, returning to Sydney on June 9th.
We fly in to Rome and fly out from London.

Our itinerary, and hopeful train modes, go something like this:

Rome - Florence (train)
Florence - Riomaggiore (train)
Riomaggiore - Venice (train)
Venice - Nice (train)
Nice - Aix en Provence (train)
Aix en Provence - Marseille (train)
Marseille - Barcelona (flight)
Barcelona - Granada (flight)
Granada - Cordoba (train)
Cordoba - Madrid (train)
Madrid - San Sebastian (train)
San Sebastian - Paris (train)
Paris - Amsterdam (train)
Amsterdam - Berlin(train)
Berlin - Edinburgh (flight)
Edinburgh - London (train)

Now, there's 12 train trips within the Europe continent (excluding the UK legs, as the Eurail Global pass excludes them), so we'd be looking at the 15 days in 2 months ($922 AUD)

We had a slightly different plan (that included Seville instead of Barcelona and Granada), and we worked out our total travel cost (using point to point searched with no railpass and including flights) to be approx $1300 AUD. I think the train travel alone was around $900-1100 AUD

Now the two things we're confused on:

1. Can the railpass be used on regional trains, like the smaller 2-4 hours legs within countries (ie: Florence to Riomaggiore or Nice to Aix en Provence)? Do these need reservations or can you just hop the trail on flash your global pass?

2. Reservation costs - if we to book the major, inter-country trains only, and not the smaller internal trips, would the total cost of train travel be the same, more or less?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice :D

Hi Kirsty.
Regional trains are usually free. Have a look at the list here: [ux]https://rail.cc/en/eurail-validity
Just hop on the train. :)

About your calculation Eurail Pass vs point to point tickets: ticket prices depends on your travel date, how long in advance you buy them, etc ... so I can not make the calculation for you. You have to do it by yourself... :)

But I think, if you travel dates are fixed, you might travel cheaper by special price tickets.
Pre-booking time for European train tickets is usually max. 3 months.

The italian train connections via: [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux] - these are e-tickets - order and print out at home, very easy and save.
Rome - Florence: e-ticket from EUR 24 - [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux]
Florence - Riomaggiore: e-ticket from EUR 19 (via trenitalia.com)
Riomaggiore - Venice: e-ticket from EUR 30 (via trenitalia.com)
Venice - Milan ([ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux]) and then a ticket Milan - Ventimiglia from EUR 14 ([ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux]). Then from Ventimiglia to Nice by local TER train (get it at the ticket machine for EUR 6)
Nice - Aix en Provence: from EUR 29 - [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux]
Aix en Provence - Marseilles: from EUR 5 - [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux]

Spanish trains: [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/renfe[/ux] - as well as e-tickets to print out at home. Easy and save. :)

San Sebastian - Paris: first by local Euskotren to Hendaye (less than EUR 2), then by French TGV-train to Paris: from EUR 36 - [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux]

Paris - Amsterdam: direct high speed train Thalys - [ux]https://rail.shop/beurope[/ux] from EUR 35

UK: nationalrail.co.uk

And now it's time to calculate... ;)

Please support railcc:
- buy your rail passes and tickets here on the recommended website: [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
- add locations of your home-town (bars, nice places, ...)
Thank you! :)

Hej,

you can easily go Marseille - Barcelona and Barcelona - Granada by train as well!

- From Marseille to Barcelona it is quite a long trip (almost one day), but moreorless along the Mediterranean coast along scenic lines. Anyway I would recommend to make a stopover in Perpignan and then travel with the Petit Train Jaune the following day to Barcelona :arr: https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/
- From Barcelona to Granada you could go with the night train :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/barcelona-granada-th-897/82
