Well...I think it is not possible to give a general answer. What are you looking for - going out or sleeping somewhere outside? Do you have any ideas where to go yet?

Well...I probably would not sleep on a bench in central Amsterdam...too many dazed and confused tourists. :D
Apart from that I would consider Amsterdam not more dangerous than the average big European city. Take care of your belongings to avoid being the target of pickpockets and you should be fine. Cant tell if there are scammers around but I can usually avoid them... If you are looking for a place to sleep, the night shuttle trains running Utrecht - Amsterdam - Rotterdam are a good option, although you cannot expect a quiet and dark night train. ;)

Well...Paris, Lisbon, London, Rome...these are probably the most important big cities for me. Also Budapest, Stockholm, Prague. I'm not too fond of Berlin or Barcelona...Amsterdam is ok as well...Edinburgh, Bergen, Belgrade, Palermo, Florence, Bern, Marseille, Sevilla, Porto, Bruges, Gent,...

AMSterdam is not safe at all for tourists- theft, deceit, but most often from cars, is rampant. Anyway-we have far too many tourists anyway already, and can miss a load of them. There are many, many far nicer and cheaper towns in NL.

Nahh...
When I first come into a new city, I am usually more cautious and take the camera out of the backpack only when needed. As soon as I get a feeling of the city, where it is safe and not I usually carry it outside the backpack.
If I am passing crowded places and streets I usually wrap the strap around my wrist several times and take the camera by the lens, if there is less going on I also just carry it around my shoulder. You get used to it.
On (night) trains I also have a feeling whether I can leave my stuff alone when I have to go to the toilet or elsewhere and when not. Overnight I try to keep the backpack with the camera as close to me as possible (if I am not alone). :)
