Hej,

nice to hear from you - that's a quite cool route you've taken so far! 8)

1) Both trains are of the same type, Talgo Trenhotels. With a 2nd class IR pass you have two options, either regular seats (not very comfortable, depends also if already refurbished or not) or a bed in a 4bed sleeper - I'd prefer that, at least on one leg of the journey.

2) 6€ reservation fee... I have heard issues with TGV on that route where InterRailers were told the train was full altough plenty of free seats were available - the quota issue. You might try the Abo Forfait solution, although I dont know if they are more strict not (it was fine in February and July this year for me)

I dont have a schedule at hand but you might also take a TER without reservation instead of the TGV

What are your exact travel dates? Keep in mind that next Sunday the new timetables will be in force almost throughout Europe and timings might change!

3) Did you check on the SNCF website if the train runs on the date you want to go? Since NZ hints at another schedule search engine that that of SNCF. ;)
6€ for a quite OK reclining seat or 18€ for a bed in a 6bed couchette - I'd save the money and take the reclining seat, have done it quite often already :)

4) 3€ reservation recommended in IC trains so you have a seat - otherwise other travellers might claim your seat because they have a reservation for it.
IC are quite OK, not as new and shiny as the Frecce, but...OK. ;)

5) :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/milan-syracuse-icn-1963/237
Only Cucette Comfort, a modernised 4bed couchette and sleeper available, no seats!
Just depends on how much money you want to spend... ;)
The sleeper cabin is smaller, but you might only have one other traveller in the same cabin, the couchette sleeps four...I'd go with the sleeper.
