I'm going on my first interrail trip in just a few days time using the 10 travel days within 22 pass but have currently only reserved a couple of trains. I would like some help identifying which of my train journeys require a reservation. Also, whether I can/must reserve these at the station or in advance. We tried to use the train connections guide on the railcc site but it seemed for a lot of them, we were unable to book online. The trains we plan on using are as follows:

Paris-Berlin (night train, seat) - RESERVED
Berlin-Prague
Prague-Budapest via Vienna
Budapest-Split (night train, sleeper)
Split-Zagreb
Zagreb-Venice (night train, couchette)
Venice-Rome - RESERVED
Rome-Chamonix via Milan

We don't know the exact details of the Rome-Chamonix leg but believe we can get a train to Chamonix from Milan and therefore would want to travel from Rome to Milan on the high speed train.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

Berlin - Prague: EC train, no reservation required
Prague - Vienna: as above
Vienna - Budapest: Railjet, no reservation required
Budapest - Split: Keep in mind that the direct night train runs twice weekly only! If it fits into your travel plans, make a reservation early, for instance at Berlin Hbf. If you cant get a reservation or you have to travel on another date, here are alternative connections :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/budapest-to-split
Split - Zagreb: Reservation needed, buy it locally, it is only 1€
Zagreb - Venice: The direct night train is suspended! :arr: https://rail.cc/en/night-train/hungary/hu Instead, go to Ljubljana first, then have a look at this route :arr: https://rail.cc/blog/travel-lake-bled-train/
Rome - Chamonix: This is a bit complicated. On the Mont Cenis route (Milan - Lyon via Modane) the direct TGV trains have a whopping 55€ reservation fee... Instead, I would travel via Switzerland: From Milano via Domodossola - Brig, then to Martigny. From Martigny you can travel with Mont Blanc Express to Martigny. :arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-company/transport-martigny-regions/100

Thanks for the help, you're a life saver!

That's bad news about the night train being suspended. I didn't make it clear in the original post but we weren't planning on spending a night in Zagreb, just a day trip before getting the overnight train. So our options now are either to spend a night in Zagreb or Ljubljana. Ideally we would choose Ljubljana so we can get the earlier connection to Venice but is it even possible to get from Split to Ljubljana in one day?

Thanks for the tips on the Rome-Chamonix leg too. I assume we would still need a reservation for Rome-Milan?

Hi.
You can use the night train Split to Zagreb and then continue via Ljubljana to Italy.
Split - Zagreb: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/split-to-zagreb
Zagreb - Ljubljana: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/zagreb-to-ljubljana
Ljubljana - Italy (see link above given by Flow): https://rail.cc/en/interrail/ljubljana-to-venice

An nice stop would be Lake Bled in Slovenia.

Peter :)

That sounds perfect, thanks very much. Are we able to reserve the night train at the station as I can't seem to do it online?

Not possible online.
Buy it at a station, either in Berlin, Vienna or Budapest... or when you arrive in Split. :)

And if you like the information on railcc, support us and buy your official Interrail pass via our partner link [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Thank you. :)

Peter :)
