Hello! I am trying to reserve via the shopping cart but when I try to pick reserve seats only it doesn't allow me to continue. It gives me an error message saying, It's not possible to make a reservation for an internatinal ticket without the purchase of a ticket, etc. I have the InterRail ticket but don't know where to enter it, thanks!!!! THe date for Amsterdam-Berlin is August 19-20, 3 passengers 1 adult 2 children

Okay, also trying to book overnight BUdapest to Muncih and can't!!! THe date for BUdapest-Munich is August 25-26, 3 passengers, just don't see where the option for reserving with InterRail or without purchasing is, HELPPPPP!!!!! :'(

Hi.
You have to follow exactly the description bellow the map:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/amsterdam-prague-cnl457/15
Important: which date you want to travel ?
Peter :)

Okay, sorry I just saw your message. So everything is fine until I select the train I want (12:56-19:19) and I don't know if I choose purchase because I see no other option. Also, if there is 1 change does that mean we actually have to get off and switch trains?? Thanks again, your website is amazingly helpful!

Oh. You are talking about a day train connection!
No need to buy a reservation for Amsterdam to Berlin, these trains are free to use with Interrail.
https://rail.cc/en/interrail/amsterdam-to-berlin

The same for day trains on Budapest to Munich.
https://rail.cc/en/interrail/budapest-to-munich

But if you want a reservation, you can get them directly at a railway station. I am not shure, but I think in the netherlands they charge a service fee, so try to get it before in an other country.

Maybe also have a look at the step-by-step guide for Interrailers if the company where you bought did not explained you how to use your Interrail pass correctly: https://rail.cc/en/first-time-interrail

And here is a list of trains which require an extra reservation: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

Have a nice evening, Peter :)

Dear Peter,

I apologize for the confusion but I do need two overnight trains:

Amsterdam to Berlin August 19-20 21:04-06:55 and 22:23-10:11
Budapest-Munich August 25-26 (I believe the time is 21:10-06:15 arrival time Munich) 3 passengers for each, thank you!!

Ok. Then by overnight train.

Amsterdam - Berlin: this is the direct overnight train (booking like explained bellow the map!!):
:arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/amsterdam-prague-cnl457/15
The connection you mention is NOT an overnight train. These are two normal ICE trains: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/ice-deutsche-bahn/11
You can use the for free, no need to make a reservation for them.
But you have 3 1/2 hours in Duisburg in the middle of the night.

Budapest - Munich: you can also use free and direct day trains (Railjet - RJ), as it isn't such a long trip and the night train not really worth. Maybe it is better to stay one more night in an inexpensive hostel in Budapest.
:arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/budapest-munich-en-462/56
It's the same booking procedure like for the train above. Just follow the instruction bellow the map, step by step!

Peter thank you Oh my God, I'm there, (Budapest-Munich) anyway, you are amazing, I DIDID IT IT!!!!!!! One question, what is the day couch (3 persons in compartment or center aisle coach). Is that okay for me and two kids?

THe 3 1/2 hours in the middle of the night, am I on the train or do I have to get off and swtich to another? That's a doubt I have, when the trains say changes 2 or 3 does that acutally mean I get off the train and switch to another or is it just stopovers in differnet places?

ALso, do they stamp passports at train stations anymore???

Where can I send you a bottle of....something??!!!! o) You are the KIng!!!

Budapest - Munich: The daytime trains are Railjet trains which only have center aisle coaches! No compartments on this route.

When it says change you have to change the train. Get out, go to another platform, go in another train. ;)

No, within Schengen area passports are not stamped anymore you probably wont meet any border police at all.

Hi Flo!

OK, well on the overnight train you have the following options:

6 seat compartment: Regular daytime style compartment, you wont be able to lay down, instead you have to sit all night through in a possibly full compartment. Not very comfortable.
6/4 bed couchette: Same sized compartment as above but with bunks on each side instead of seats. Depending on which category you book either 4 or 6 berths are in use (2 or 3 on each side of the compartment). You can lay down and sleep. Still quite cheap but much more comfortable.
3 bed sleeper: Sleeper compartment with three berths plus washbasin in the cabin. Proper linen and pillow provided plus a small complimentary breakfast. Recommended if you want some privacy, plus very comfortable.

They are saying day couch three persons in compartment or center aisle coach, so is that the uncomfortable sitting down one? If I pick the next option, couchette 3 persons in 6 berth cabin, will they put some other people in with us?? THank you!!

Who is they? On which site do you look for reservations?

Couchettes are mixed sex and you might travel with others.
Sleepers are separated by sex unless you book a whole compartment on your own. If you would travel alone in a 3bed compartment you might share it with two other women.

On the link you provided I am at the step where I can reserve the place I will sleep. I am traveling with my two kids so we are three passengers. The choice for 9 euros is under the category of Day Couch Then highlighted is 3 persons in compartment or center aisle coach. Three persons would be myself and my two kids. Can you see this link:

Budapest-Munich which after having done it I realized doesn't do online tickets, so can't do it anyway because I leave on Wednesday morning. Can I do this at the station when I arrive in Budapest? Also, it is called a day couch and they also mention it in the Amsterdam Berlin overnight. I am also trying to do Munich-Rothenburg and Lausanne-Venice (both overnights) any suggestions?? Thanks again Flow!

You can also reserve at the station in Berlin. I would recommend this as it would be a few days in advance which is recommended.

The two other trips are not possible overnight (at least not possible in a sensible way). Travel during the day.

I was thinking night because the trips are so long, not to waste days in the travelling but it's difficult, no?

Please use a schedule planner and you will see that the trips

- are not _that_ long
- make no sense overnight

:arr: https://rail.cc/en/search-train-route ;)

Examples:

München 1145 - 1215 Augsburg
Augsburg 1230 - 1402 Steinach
Steinach 1435 - 1449 Rothenburg

No reservations necessary!

Lausanne 0817 - 1440 Venezia

This is a direct EC (10€ reservation) and I would highly recommend this connection! Anyway, currently there is a bus replacement on parts of the route due to construction works. But try to get a reservation for this train as it is the easiest, fastest and cheapest connection available!

Day couch is just a sloppy translation. On that night train Budapest - Venice only 6seat compartments are available! And of course couchette and sleeper accomodation.

Hmm..yeah, the problem is I need to get out of too expensive Switzerland as soon as possible! :'(
I'm going to visit the chocoate museum near Broc and Gruyere factory, then head towards Italy that same afternoon. I was trying to find an in between spot because if I try to go all the way to Venice, I will get there at night and have to pay just for sleeping in Venice (which is also pretty pricey). I don't want to abuse of your help, it's just such a relief to have someone who understand the way this works. I am going to Venice, Firenze, Rome and whatever else comes along. Any suggestions on a place to stop between Lausanne and Venice? (or firenze or rome for that matter)! THANK YOUUUU

Well, if you go to Broc that same day I would try to make it to Milano in the evening and stay there - not many other choices available.

Yeah, that really seems to be the only choice, although Milano isnt on my must see list, kids would like to see the AC Milan camp anyway, thank you!!!!!

I'm wondering if in the routes that have several connections 4,5,6 the passengers are given enough time to actually change trains. There are a some that give 30 but others 4 minutes. Is it just up to you or is it feasible that we will have enough time to actually catch the connecting train that is being offered as part of the itinerary?

Thank you once again!!!!!!

The schedule planners operate with changing times which are individual for each station - they usually only show connections which are feasible.

For instance, the allowed changing time in a big station can be up to 10 minutes, thus only connections with at least 10 minutes time between trains are shown.
In other, smaller, stations, less time to change trains is necessary. You can rely on that info from the schedule planners. Only in case of delays always tell the staff that you have a connection to make and they will phone up the dispatcher to ask the other train to wait.
