Hello!
My girlfriend and I set out to montpellier tomorrow at 9am for the first step of our interrail journey. We have a one month pass and our current itinerary is:
Montpellier - milan - rome - llubjana - budapest - vienna - prague - berlin - munich - amsterdam - paris
Does this itinerary sound plausible to fit in within one month?
If so, could we get some help on the best routes to take for each leg? (by 'best' i mean least reservations and least changes)
Also, are there any good night trains that spring out from any of the journeys Ive written down? The supplement would counter act the cost of a room, so that would be fine.
Sorry for asking a lot, we are just already out travelling and havent got access to the internet for long enough to seek this info out! (stupid me for not planning more ahead!!)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Manythanks!

Hi L + J,
the route seems reasonable enough for one month.
Night trains make sense on the following routes:
- Rome - Ljubljana (travel to Trieste, then cross the border as described here :arr: https://rail.cc/blog/travel-lake-bled-train/ or via Villa Opicina - Sezana)
- Milan - Rome
- Berlin - Munich
- Munich - Amsterdam
:arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train
For good travel routes have a look here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
If you have purchased your IR tickets at railcc, you can upgrade to the Premium section of the forum where we can provide more detailed info. :arr: https://rail.cc///f8461

Thank you Flo!
Am I right in thinking this would be my easiest route from montpellier to milan? Im not aware of the reservation fees for it which worries me..
Montpellier 10:07 >> Nice 14:36
Nice 15:55 >> Ventimiglia 16:43
Ventimiglia 16:58 >> Milan Centrale 20:50
Thanks!

I enquired this afternoon about the journey I mentioned above and was told that the reservation fee from montpellier - nice is 18 euros....
Is this right? Is there an alternative service to milan tomorrow which wont cost so much in reservation fees?
thanks

Where did you ask?

At the ticket desk in Montpellier St Roch station. The lady told us it was 18 euros to reserve between st roch and nice, free between nice and ventimigia, and then another fee between ventimigia and milan [which she couldnt access to tell us how much reserving that leg would be and we would have to enquire at ventimiglia]

OK, this means that the quota for IR travellers on this train for the regular 6€ reservation is full and SNCF wants to charge you the extra-nasty 18€ reservation fee...
Three options:
- Pay the 18€ for the regular reservation
- Get an abo forfait reservation at a yellow ticket machine at the station :arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/tgv-sncf/42#p13819
- Travel without reservations:
Montpellier 0814 - 0922 Avignon
Avignon 1016 - 1150 Marseille
Marseille 1231 - 1505 Nice
Nice 1526 - 1613 Ventimiglia
Ventimiglia 1658 - 2050 Milano :arr: This is an IC train for which a 3€ reservation is recommended but not compulsory.
A similar connection runs exactly two hours later; arrival/departure times at intermediate stations may alter some minutes.

Hiya Flo!
I checked on the [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] website and it tells me that the train is a regional train and not a TGV train, so aould the yelloz ticket machine reservation work?
Thank you so much for your help so far i`m so very grateful!

Which train are you talking about? The 1007 from Montpellier? This is an Intercités train with compulsory reservation, same as TGV.
Or do you mean another train?

Yes the 1007 train from Montpellier St Roch to Milan Central, which says that Montpellier to Nice is on a Schnellzug, then Nice to Ventimiglia is Regional express and Ventimiglia to Milan is Intercites. So I wasnt sure if the machine reservation would work on a Schnellzug?

Electronic schedule planers are NOT Interrail schedule planners.
Often you won't find the correctly named trains there.
Therefore thrust the information we have here on railcc - the website is online since more than 16 years now, I think this should be enough experience... :)

Well, yeah, the online schedule planners do not always display the correct train category of trains in other countries. Schnellzug is in that case a Intercités in France and on this route these train category has compulsory reservation. So it will work at the machine. Just bear in mind that the abo forfait reservations are not official IR reservations - they are usually accepted (I have been travelling myself with such reservations three times this year without problems) by staff but you have no guarantee.
At some point we will put online a train category translator I hope... ;)

No problem, it's alright! :D
We run the site for helping out other travellers if needed. Enjoy your trip tomorrow! ;)
Oh, and when taking the regional train from Nice to Ventimiglia, sit on the right for the best views of the Mediterranean coast.

Your tip worked! We had no issues at all with the €3 reservation.
Were now in ljubljana and wanting to carry on into budapest and then a couple of days later, vienna. Were okay with stopping off on the way if the journey time is massive. Any tips on what our easiest route through these countries would be? I did read elsewhere that all connections from ljub to budapest had been suspended in 2008 but i dont know if that is still the case? I did find this....?

Hi.
Lake Bled is nice and very close to Ljubljana.
Trains are definitely running on Ljubljana to Budapest. Also the direct day train.
Schedules are here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/ljubljana-to-budapest

Ljubljana to budapest was fine. Worked out well as a rest day after all the walking!
One thing of note is that on the train from nova gorica to ljubljana, railcc says that there is a change in sezana but when we got off the train, we realised that that same train was the one we should be on, so we hopped back on :) no change necessary, only later in divaca.

Hej L+J,
thanks for the hint with Sezana - I will check that tomorrow. :)

Hej,
I finally checked the timetable and all trains are shown with a change of trains in Sezana. Anyway, it is common practice in many countries that a trainset then is used for the connecting service as in your example. As the connection is officially with a change of trains in Sezana I will keep it that way in our schedules as well in case you have to actually change trains. Thank you anyway for pointing this out. ;)
