Rome - Paris: suggested stopovers / routes ?

Hi all,

I`ll be travelling from Rome, having already seen Barcelona, Marseilles and Genoa. Eventually I`ll head to Paris, but as I have two days on my interrail pass to use up, I`m keen to stop somewhere on the way.

I was thinking maybe Bern, but does anyone have better suggestions? Any good routes? Are night trains an option?
