Hi everyone

I`d be really grateful if any of you could offer me some advice.

I have an interrail pass, and will be travelling mostly in Western Europe.
After Barcelona, I`ll be travelling to Marseille for a few days. After that, I intend to end up in Rome, but would people recommend heading straight there, or stopping somewhere nice on the way (eg Bologna, Genoa, Milan, Venice)?

Also, which route is best, and is there much extra cost in making the reservation?

Thanks for all your help

:D

Hi,

well, the obvious and only sensible route is along the coast to Genova. Then you can either continue along the coast to Rome or go to Milano and then with a high speed train to Roma.

Here are possible routes Marseille - Roma in one single travel day. :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/marseille-to-rome
Click on the connections to see for which trains you will need extra reservations.

If you want to travel cheap, go to Genova, and then continue along the coast - with an overnight stop.

Hi Flo

Thanks for the advice! I`ve booked into Genoa for a night based on what you suggested.

Now I`m thinking about how to get out of Rome. I want to end up in Paris, but I`ll break the journey down again. Where would people suggest making an overnight stop? I was thinking about Bern. Any better ideas?

And are there any night trains heading in that sort of area?

Thanks again for any help

Hi.
I recommend a stop in Switzerland ...
Bern is nice, I also like Zurich ... but it is a personal decision ... :)
But to get to Switzerland, first travel the Milan in the morning (use a high speed train for reservation EUR 10), then from Milan the following route to Switzerland. Really amazing: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/milan-to-zurich

Thanks Peter,

Does that train travel everyday? I`d probably be going on a Sunday. And you`d recommend spending all that time on the train (ie the scenery is really that good) rather than getting a faster train and enjoying a city (like Bern or Zurich)?

Another option I was considering was doing Venice, as there are trains directly from there to Paris, but I heard it can be quite crowded. Lyons perhaps?

Anyway, thanks for all your help

Hi.
Train also runs on weekends.
I personally would prefer this spectacular train ride instead of a city.
The direct night train Venice to Paris is NOT included in Interrail, you will need a standard ticket: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/venice-paris-th-220/8

Thanks Peter,

Would the train you recommend also got to Bern? Which is easier to get to Paris, from Bern or Zurich?

Thanks

Hej J,

from Zürich it is only one hour by IC to Bern; direct TGV (9€ reservation) run every two hours Zürich - Basel - Paris; from Bern, go to Basel (1h) to catch the TGV there; from Bern there is also a morning direct TGV service to Paris and an evening connection via Pontarlier.
All TGV are TGV Lyria services :arr: https://rail.cc/en-type-country/tgv-lyria/lyria-lyria/162
