Hi guys,

I'll have 3 days to spend in Switzerland before heading to Austria and I planned my trip as below. Do you recommend any other cool things to see / do on the way?

Day 1: Geneva - Lausanne - Chillon - Zermatt
Day 2: Zermatt - Interlaken - Lauterbrunnen - Eigergletscher - Alpiglen - Grindelwald - Lauterbrunnen
Day 3: Lauterbrunnen - Luzern - Pilatus - Alpnachstdat - Luzern
Day 4: Luzern to Salzburg, via Sargans and Lichtenstein

Cheers,
Radu

Hej Radu,

if you are travelling with an IR pass, be aware that you will have to get an extra ticket for the trains in Jungfrau region. :arr: https://rail.cc/en/jungfraujoch/f1841
On the cog railway to Pilatus you get a 30% discount with IR.
To Zermatt, you have to use MGB from Visp to Zermatt where you would have to get a full fare ticket as well - they only grant <26 a 50% discount.

Depending on whether you still want to go to all these places or not, some suggestions on where to go with IR.

Geneve - Lausanne - Chillon - Montreux and then with MOB via Gstaad - Zweisimmen to Spiez; then either to Bern (which is a really beautiful city) or to Interlaken/somewhere along Lake Brienz.
From Interlaken you can go with ZB to Meiringen, then one or two stops with MIB (InterRail not valid but cheap because of short distance) to the Aare gorge. Back in Meiringen, travel again with ZB over Brünigpass route to Luzern/Pilatus. In case you stayed at Bern before, just take an IC to Interlaken first, then continue as described above to Meiringen and so on.

From Luzern, you could travel the famous Gotthard line south to Lugano and travel with Centovalli railway to Domodossola and then back to Brig - Bern - Zürich. Or, but this probably would take too much time, from Domodossola to Milano - Tirano and then with Berninabahn :arr: https://rail.cc/en/train/milan-to-zurich

Hi Flo,

Thank you for the answer. I do travel with an IR, yes (actually I bought it from railcc :) ).

I know about the extra tickets for Jungfrau and for Pilatus. Didn't know about Zermatt, so thanks for that.

I'll check out the other locations you suggested and see if I can / should adapt my trip.

Cheers,
Radu

I would recommend visiting the Verkehrshaus in Luzern. It is very nice and you can spent a lot of hours there. They have trains, cars, ships and aircraft, a corner related to media, planetarium and IMAX. And, if the weather is nice, you can go to the Lido, after the museum and take a swim in the lake.

Thank you Tom, I will keep that in mind. I'm a big fan of Science Museums (this one seems like that), so I might just go there.

Cheers,
Radu

Hej Radu,

thanks for buying at railcc! :)

- On your way from Zermatt to Interlaken, I would recommend to travel the old route via the Lötschberg pass route via Brig - Goppenstein - Kandersteg to Spiez instead of going the direct way through Lötschberg base tunnel. If you have enough time to spare, this definitely will be more scenic and interesting than just going through a 30km tunnel.
From Spiez, where you have to change to Interlaken anyway, sit on the left side of the train to enjoy the view of Lake Thun. ;)
- On the way from Interlaken to Pilatus, sit on the right to enjoy Lake Brienz. As I've said before, from Meiringen it is just a few km to Aare gorge, so if you have time go there. :)
- In Luzern, Verkehrshaus indeed is fantastic! While in Luzern you could also go to Rigi, a mountain with fanstastic views all over Switzerland - you get a 50% discount with IR on the two lines that run to the top, either from Vitznau (go there by boat) or from Arth-Goldau (can use regular trains there).
- On the way to Liechtenstein - Salzburg, the most scenic way from Luzern would be with Voralpenexpress via Arth-Goldau to Pfäffikon.
