Hi,
I'm new to Interrail and currently planning on making a trip by myself in preferably Western Europe. I will be using a 5 travel days in 10 days card and the main places i'm interested in are Paris, Barcelona and maybe a German city on the way back home (home being Amsterdam). My initial route was Amsterdam-Paris-Barcelona-Milan-Munich-Amsterdam, but the connections from and to Milan seem to be expensive and time-consuming. Would someone maybe have a suggestion for a place between Barcelona and Munich which is not too expensive (maybe with nice beaches..?) and has good connections? Or an alternative route to Milan?

Hey,
I'm going to do a similar route in 2 weeks.
Cologne - Amsterdam - Paris - San Sebastian - Nice - Milano - Zürich
We take a night train from Paris to Irun, so you can take an night train to Portbou. (https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/paris-portbou-icn-3731/78) and continue to Barcelona.
From Barcelona you can take a train to Nice (https://rail.cc/en/interrail/barcelona-to-nice).
Nice to Milano: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/nice-to-milan
Milano to Muinch via Zürich. https://rail.cc/en/interrail/milan-to-zurich and https://rail.cc/en/interrail/zurich-to-munich
From Muinch you can https://rail.cc/en/interrail/munich-to-amsterdam (maybe buy this ticket, because you only have 5 days to travel and you are not allowed to travel in your home country with the IR-Ticket).

Hi.
NatureOne already explained everything. :)
Just two additional informations:
1) Milan - Munich: beside the faster route, there is one which takes much longer, but it is nice.
Milan - Zurich or Chur: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/milan-to-zurich
Then Zurich or Chur to Munich.
2) If you order early, you will get special prices for Munich to Amsterdam. It is an e-ticket to print out at home. Either for night or day train connections. Order here: [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux]
Peter :)

Thanks for you're advice, I looked into it but it turns out that the connection times between nice and milano are quite uncoordinated. for example if i were to take the train barca-nice which arrrives at around 23h i would be stranded for the night in Nice for 9 hours since Nice-Milan doesn't leave till 8h -_- ......

mhm so you maybe have to stay in Nice :)
Nevertheless you'll need two days of your pass to travel from Barcelona to Milano. So you can take an a train from Barcelona to Toulouse. From there you can take the night train to Nice and continue to Milano.
For example: Barcelona - Narbonne (Talgo - you have to pay 6,50€ extra fee) - Toulouse (Teoz - 6 € fee).
I found that connection on [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] , but I believe it's not going every day. (for example)
Barcelona Sants Di, 21.08.12 ab 16:42 TLG 460 Talgo
Narbonne Di, 21.08.12 an 20:16
Narbonne Di, 21.08.12 ab 20:58 4764 Schnellzug
Toulouse-Matabiau Di, 21.08.12 an 22:10
Toulouse-Matabiau Mi, 22.08.12 ab 00:37 NZ 4630 Nachtzug
Nice Ville Mi, 22.08.12 an 08:33
Nice Ville Mi, 22.08.12 ab 09:55 RE 86021 Regional-Express
Ventimiglia Mi, 22.08.12 an 10:43
Ventimiglia Mi, 22.08.12 ab 10:58 IC 745/IC 746 Intercity
Milano Centrale Mi, 22.08.12 an 14:55
It's not the best connection (extra fees for: Talgo (6,50), Teoz (6,00), IC (3,00), Night train (depends 6€ or 20,60€)
the website of deutsche bahn also offers this connection:
Barcelona Sants Di, 21.08.12 ab 08:16 A 233 Arco/Alvia/Avant
Figueres Vilafant Di, 21.08.12 an 10:00
Figueres Vilafant Di, 21.08.12 ab 10:20 TGV 6232 TGV
Valence TGV Di, 21.08.12 an 13:38
Valence TGV Di, 21.08.12 ab 14:00 Bus Bus
Chambery-Challes-E Di, 21.08.12 an 16:00
Chambery-Challes-E Di, 21.08.12 ab 17:43 TGV 9249 TGV
Milano Porta Garibaldi Di, 21.08.12 an 21:55
Or you take a flight by Ryanair. There 3 daily flights from Barcelona El Prat to Bergamo and take a train from Bergamo to Milano (~5€). The flight starts at 27€ + 35€ for 20kg luggage. So the night train might be the best solution.

If you take this connection with the Talgo, make sure you make the reservation for that train outside of Spain! As RENFE would charge you 18€ instead of just 6,50€ as other railways do.
Anyway, your best option would be the direct Elipsos night train Barcelona - Milano. Though it is rather expensive (50€ for a seat) it is a quite fast and comfortable overnight connection.

hmm okay thank you all for the information. Right now the easiest option (and unfortunately most expensive one) is the direct Elipsos train for 50 euros...
I'll keep Milan in mind ,but does anyone maybe have any other example routes (I'll consider anything as long as they include: Paris,Barcelona and back to Amsterdam in 5 days).

So anyone know of a nice, inexpensive route for 5 in 10 days which include Paris, Barcelona and back home (Amsterdam)???

Day 1 Amsterdam - Paris (via Antwerpen - Gent - Lille); if you want, have a stop in Antwerpen or Gent (or Brugge) during the day
Day 2 Paris
Day 3 Paris and overnight train to Latour de Carol, then Petit Train Jaune to Perpignan and finally to Barcelona via Cerbere - Girona (or other way round: night train to Perpignan, Petit Train Jaune to Latour de Carol and then to Barcelona)
Day 4 Barcelona
Day 5 Barcelona
Day 6 Barcelona - Marseille
Day 7 Marseille
Day 8 Marseille - Lyon (if you have time with a short trip to Cote Bleue first)
Day 9 Lyon
Day 10 Lyon - Geneve - some swiss mountain railway - Amsterdam
