Are there passport and document checks as you cross the border of each country?

Most countries not:

The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Cyprus, Czech, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland all signed the treaty of Schengen. Which means that you can travel without passport checks.

Switzerland, the Baltic states and Eastern Europe will activate the treaty soon, but there are still bordercontrols.

So u better edit your post because someone may get confused

Between The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden normaly they do not check passports, although last summer bloody french border police was too bored or smth and imitated a passport control in one doorway of railway station, when we were coming from Spain, Barcelona. Looked quite funny :((

Anyway, when u r coming from these countries to Cyprus, Czech, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland or travel between them u must have passport or identity card ;)

U definetely need passport in those countries which do not belong to EU like Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey etc.
