Is there a guide for Europe or Eastern Europe (I cannot carry around a book for each country) that includes a basic vocabulary list for each major language? When I was in Poland for a week I picked up some basic Polish, enough to negotiate a two-bus journey there and back by myself without English, but I really felt that if I had just had 100 words before I arrived, I would have been in a much better position. Any recommendations?

We used Lonely Planets Europe on a Shoestring, which includes basic vocab for many european languages as well as cheap places to eat etc

Thanks. That sounds like just the sort of thing.

I haven't had much time to really prepare for this trip in any way, but that's part of the fun, isn't it? :P

Yeah. I'm split between going on an organised trip, or just hopping on and off trains - and getting off where it looks nice. :P

Good idea actually. I always take math quizzes with me on trains and planes. Soduku is also good to keep your brain active. Otherwise I am thinking about getting a handheld Nintendo as well, as I travel a lot. But sometimes all you want to do when you are travelling is just relax and you dont want to have to think about anything.

:D
