Hello, my name is James and I am currently planning my InterRail trip starting on 3 August 2012. I will start from Barcelona (Spain), where I am now, and intend to visit friends in Avignon (France), Venice (Italy), Budapest (Hungary), Prague (Czech Republic) and finish in Stockholm (where I have to be on 15 August 2012).
I am having a very hard time finding and reserving the right trains for my itinerary.
1. Is reservation compulsory in all trains which start from one country and end in another country?
2. What is the best way of making train reservations in advance?
3. I found a train leaving Barcelona Sants going to Cerbère (from where I will take another train to Avignon) but the reservation cost as given here on railcc is 25 euros. I find it too expensive.
4. Can you please give any recommendations on the trains to take for my itinerary but without having to pay expensive train reservations?
Thank you!
James

Hi James.
Two links which are important for you:
A: The railcc schedules, which will show you on several travel routes where you have to pay extra and also the FREE alternative connections: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
B: The information about reservation in different types of trains: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation
1: NO. See links above.
2: Some are available online. But I recommend a railway station, for example in Barcelona.
3: Use a free local train to Figueres (dep. 1146, arr. 1336). There you change the station to Figueres Vilafant (by bus EUR 1,50 - walking: 20-30 minutes). Now in the TGV (dep. 1420, with reservation - https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/tgv-sncf/42 ) to Nimes (arr. 1649), from there change to a regional train (dep. 1723) to Avignion Centre (arr. 1801).
4: Check the links on the top of this topic. Avignion to Italy will be hard as the TGVs ( https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/tgv-artesia/artesia-artesia/163 ) on this route (Paris - Lyon - Milan) are not included in Interrail. Prague to Stockholm... I would recommend by free train to Berlin, there into the night train to Malmö and up to Stockholm.
Peter :)
