Hello,
I'm planning my journey for september, and I'm trying to find a connection between these cities. Actually I'm not sure If I'll go from Bucharest to Sofia, Istanbul and then Athens, or I'll go straight to Instanbul from Bucharest and then to Athens and Sofia.
Anyways, Greek cities somehow aren't working on InterRail connections search engine, I guess that might be caused by the fact that they are still withdrawn because of the economic situation. I've found information that there are bus connections from istanbul to Athens, but I can't really find a place where I could order my ticket, or at least check schedule. The other thing is, will I be able to leave greece from Athens by train, or I will have to buy a ticket again?
Or maybe it's just a good idea not to go there this year? :|
Thanks,
Marcin

Hi Marcin.
The situation with Greece won't change this summer. So you will have to use buses.
You could travel Bucharest to Istanbul by train. At the border to Turkey, the train stops and is replaced by a bus due to construction works (until summer 2013 - the railway tunnel connection Europe and Asia). But it is included in your Interrail pass.
Maybe there is as well an other bus replacement for 1 hour in Bulgaria.
Istanbul to Athens by bus: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/istanbul-to-athens
Athens to Sofia: I recommend by bus. I don't know the exact fare, but should be around EUR 30-40... just ask at the hostel or go to the bus terminals and book your tickets there, not online.
But instead the route to Greece, you could travel from Bucharest to Sofia, Belgrade, then to Montenegro ... from there by bus to Croatia (cheap). Croatian coast, Mostar, Sarajevo, ...
