I did the exact same route a couple of weeks ago. From Venice, we went to Rijeka by using the connection via Gorizia (which is a really nice route actually). From Rijeka, we took a bus to Krk and stayed there for i think two nights. If you're have a tent with you, take a bus to Njivice (leaves from Rijekka bus Terminal, about 5 minutes from the station, costs about 4,50 Euros per Trip www.autotrans.hr . The camping in Njivice is really nice and cheap and is located directly on the beach. From Njivice, back to Rijeka, where we stayed in a hostel opposite of the bus terminal (i think the name was Aston).
From Rijeka, there are basically two connections to Split. One leaves and 05:25 in the morning, you have to change trains in Ostarje (which is really funny, you're being dropped out of the train in the middel of nowhere in the croatian mountains) and continue at 09:17 with an ICN to Split (reservation required, about 1 Euro). You will arrive in Split at 14:00, so it's quite a long journey but especially the first part to ostarje is really scenic.

To sum up:
Venezia 10:04
Gorizia 12:41

Take Bus Nr.1 to Nova Gorica

Nova Gorica 14:10
Sezena 15:10

Sezena 15:20
Divaca 15:30

Divaca 15:32
Pivka 15:52

Pivka 16:23
Rijeka 17:55

Rijeka-Split:

Rijeka 05:25
Ostarje 08:01

Ostarje 09:17
Split 14:09

Another possibilty is to go from Rijeka to Zagreb, then take a night train from Zagreb to Split (there are three different ones if i am not mistaken). We wanted to do this in the first instance, but as all trains were full, we took the other route and didn't regret it ;) )

Have fun on this route, it was one of the most exciting ones in my whole trip ;)
