Hullo!

Does anyone know how the InterCity train (anywhere between Rome and Salerno) to Sicily compare to the daytime ICN along the same route?

I had been keen on the ICN (more exciting and saves me a night at a hostel), but in planning my end-of-year itinerary, I had decided to make Salerno my last stop on mainland Italy. The ICN for some reason does not stop in Salerno, so rather than backtracking to the dodgy Napoli Centrale to catch it, I'm opting for the day train to Sicily instead. I've been on an ICN before, but not the IC--is it a compartment train? Is the journey scenic?

Unless the journey is scenic/fun, I'm not sure about spending a whole day in the train for the 8 hour trip. The alternative would be to wait 2 hours for an 11pm train at Napoli Centrale, which I had been advised is not a good idea for safety reasons.

Would appreciate any input!

Hi!

There are several ICN trains to Sicily, many of them also stop in Napoli and Salerno, have a look here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/naples/train/c and here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/salerno/train/c

I have been to Sicily in Feb 2011 using an IC for Rome - Palermo and the ICN for Palermo - Milano. Both trips were really nice without any troubles, apart from a customs check in Messina where a guard dog checked our compartment... :os
The daytime IC usually consist of both compartment and saloon coaches. South of Napoli the line runs mostly along the sea and I would consider it rather scenic. Then you have of course the interesting ferry passage between Villa SG and Messina where you can stay on deck and relax for about an hour. The route along the north coast of Sicily is again very scenic and often close to the shore.

I had no safety issues on the night train, travelling with two others on a three bed sleeper.
