Hello, I've just finished booking all my hostels for a trip this summer, and I have three nights to get from zagreb to barcelona (it does make sense in the grand scheme of things). I am not booking any accommodation in northern Italy/South of France as it is extremely expensive on my budget. I was wondering if anyone possibly knew any night trains crossing northern Italy/the south of France that would be suitable for me to take, and if they could link me any information on these? Or in general what my best option is for crossing this area, as I've heard it's not too great for interailers. Thanks, any help would be appreciated!

Edit:

- Want to stop off at Monaco for a few hours at least, not going to spend any money, just want to look, other than that we don't care where we stop etc

Hi.
If you want to rush trough:
In the morning at 06:50h from Zagreb via Jesenice to Nova Gorica.
Border crossing like explained here: https://rail.cc/blog/travel-lake-bled-train/

From Gorizia Centrale at 14:20h via Monfalcone, Venezia Mestre to Milano Centrale.

There change to the direct night train to Barcelona: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/milan-barcelona-en-11274/166
(only Monday, Wednesday and Friday)

There is also the option using a ferry from Italy to Barcelona: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-ferry/italy/it

Or if you want to travel slower, do it like above... via Gorozia, Venice, Milan, Monaco, Nice (France), Perpignan, Little Yellow Train ( https://rail.cc/blog/little-yellow-train-video/ ), Barcelona.

railcc schedules: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route
General schedules: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

Peter :)

Thanks for that, very helpful! I've managed to put together a route that should please everyone in my group...

Going overnight from Zagreb to Venice via Villach (few hours wait in the middle, but can sleep)

Then Venice to Milan in the day and overnight from Milan to Monaco (long wait in the middle at ventimiglia but can sleep there).

Morning spent in Monaco then the train to Montpellier

A night in Montpellier and then a train from there to Barcelona, done!
