Hi there, I am currently planning my first time Interrailing. I think it is the 5 day in 10 that I will be looking for in the summer of 2013. I'm thinking of getting the ferry to amsterdam (as i live in newcastle) and starting from there, and I want to get to Budepest or Prague but i'm not sure if this is possible with only 5 travel days. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Also could anyone give me a rough estimate on how much you would spend per day in a major city, I realise you can spend as much or little as you want, but just for things like food/drink and possible the nightlife every couple of days. Thanks alot!

hey,
have a look at: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/amsterdam-to-budapest There you'll find a connection from Amsterdam to Budapest via Muinch or Berlin.
All in all the 7pm rule for night trains (https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train) is a good opportunity if you want to travel long ways. But your not allowed to use it on your first day. So it might be possible to go to a German city, like Hamburg, Berlin or Munich. (https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route) You can stay there for 2 days and use a (night) train to go to Budapest or Prague. For example:
Extra ticket from Berlin to Dresden (which is a great city too) for 19€, because of the 7pm rule. From Dresden you can use a night train to Budapest (https://rail.cc/en/interrail/berlin-to-budapest.
If you want to go to Budapest and Prague, you may also visit Vienna.
