Hi, we finish interrailing in Rome on the 20th July or so, and we really want to spend 3/4 days just hanging out at a beach, getting sand between our toes and drinking limoncello/wine! I was really interested in going to Sardinia or down to Puglia region, but I'm not sure if the large travel times make it worth the while? As far as I can see it would be 5 hours there, 5 hours back to either of these places from Rome. We won't have seen Pompeii, sadly, so if there was anywhere SANDY near to Naples that would be pretty fantastic?
Does anyone have any advice? Our only restriction is that we will probably have to fly back from Rome (or at a push Naples/Corsica could probably happen). The thing is I need to fly back (on a budget) to Liverpool or Manchester in the UK, and my boyfriend Geneva. So it makes things a little tricky as we need regular, cheap flights we can leave at the same time.
Thanks!

Hi,
do you want to make a day trip to a beach from Rome? Or do you want to stay some nights as well? If you are in Rome the obvious choice would be Ostia, the seaside resort of Rome (since old times). :)
Depending on your time resources you could also think of heading north to Viareggion for instance...although this would again take around 3 hours each way.

Hi, thanks for replying :)
We ideally want to go stay in a cheap hotel somewhere else in Italy, somewhere that's pretty and not too expensive, but also easy enough to get back to Rome from. Is there anywhere along the Bay of Naples that would be suitable? It seems to be quite rocky and cliff dominated, but if there was any hidden treasures in that region it would be ideal really. Someone said there are nice, but small, sandy beaches near to Sorrento?
Can't wait to go on the trip! Will probably be buying our passes from you guys, you've been a fantastic help :D

Sardegna is an island-that means ferry or flying-pay extra. it does not have much of great real beach (was there last sept/oct).
Note that this time of year is really horrible-the whole of IT goes on holiday then and storms to any spiaggia=beach they can head for. prices double./triple, there wont be anything cheap and you are often obliged to take full board. NO, there are no hidden gems, hidden places or quiet bays- at THAT time.
About the whole of the east coast=Adriatico is sandy beach, places like Rimini, Cattolica, Senigallia are world-famous all over Italia for that.
