Hello,
I'm trying to find the cheapest way of getting from Milan to Porto in a maximum 2 day travel, in the first 4 days of August. I was trying to get a cheap flight form somewhere near Milan, France, Germany, Spain, but the cheapest I was able to find was from Barcelona and to get from Milan to Barcelona I would have to spend 50€ on the sleeperette on the overnight train which would make it even more expensive than the direct flight from Milan.
Then I found a relatively good price from Toulouse to Porto by plane, but I looked for ways of getting to Toulouse and I think I have to use a TGV trin, which I'm not sure how much I'll have to pay in that time of the year..
If you know any way I can get from Milan to Porto, Barcelona or Madrid in a maximum 2 day travel by train, because the plane travel wouldn't count for the interrail travelling days.
The ticket would be a 10 trips in 22 days and as I said I'd be able to leave 2 days for the trip back home.
If you need anymore infos feel free to ask.
Thanks in advance!
Peter

Hi.
As example ...
Milan to Nice (free - even more connections by Italian IC train and French regional trains): https://rail.cc/en/interrail/milan-to-nice
Nice to Barcelona (free): https://rail.cc/en/interrail/nice-to-barcelona
If you want to travel Milan to Porto in 2 days, you will have to use trains with extra fees, see connections: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

I know I'll need extra fees, I would like to know what would be the cheapest I could get, because I found it way too expensive. Do you have any idea how much I would spend on a TGV trip in France?

Follow the links I gave you and click the train details. All details about reservations are there.
More information: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation
TGV in France is starting from EUR 1,50 - depends on how you book it: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/tgv-sncf/42
A cheap option would be (not every day available and 3 travel days in total):
Milano (dep ~1100h) - Ventigmillia: free IC train
Ventigmillia - Nice: free regional train
Nice - Irun: by French night train - https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/nice-irun-icn-4730/141
Irun - Lisbon by night train: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/irun-lisbon-th-313/73
Two travel days would be night train Milano-Barcelona (expensive as you know), Barcelona to Madrid by AVE train (EUR 10), night train Madrid-Lisbon.
If you found a connection via Paris (Milano-Paris-Irun-Lisbon) pay attention: the TGV Milano-Paris isn't included in Interrail anymore. :|

Ok, I think we found the reasonable solution. Travelling to Marseille one day, from there to Barcelona next day and from Barcelona we have cheap flights to Porto, so I think that will be it. Thanks for your quick help! ;)

I'm sorry, but I need a little more info on this after all. In that 3 day option you gave me, can you tell me in what week days does the Nice - Irun train work?
Also, since I'm from Portugal and that would be my return home trip, do you know if the cost of the train from Irun to the border would be the total 7€? Plus the cost of it from the border to, let's say, Coimbra, which would be a lot better for me than Lisbon, as I live in the North? I went to renfe website but I can't find any infos on interrail travelers. And I know I would be charged more for travelling in my home country, but I don't know whether it is the total price of the train or just my home country part and how that would be calculated.

Hi.
Have a look at the schedule planers here: https://rail.cc/en/search-train-route
Much easier than listing all days here in detail not knowing what day you travel.
For the night train Irun - Lisbon you only have to pay for the part from the border to your final destination in Portugal. Check the CP website. You will get a 50% discount on travels from the border to your home town in Portugal:

Have you checked the ryan air flights from Milan (Bergamo) to Porto? Usually they are quite cheap if you buy them in advance. Did the same in 2010, Ljubljana - Milan and then flight to Porto. The only downside was sleeping one night at the airport (the only hotel nearby was stupidly expensive).
Cheers,
Paulo

That was the plan all along, but the flights were too expensive, around 100€. No way :)
We booked flights from Barcelona to Porto and now we only have to find a way of getting there the day before our flight. We will probably eliminate Milan and go through Munich - Paris - Barcelona.

Hi.
On the journey Paris to Barcelona, use an inexpensive French night train and include the Little Yellow Train crossing the Pyrenees:

I don't think we'll have time to do that, since we have a scheduled flight and I think we'll get to Paris the day before the flght, the same day we need to get to Barcelona, as the day is on next day's morning,

Thanks Peter! Can you help with my other post in the Travel Routes? The one that says, Portugal to Central Europe - go on to the Eastern Countries.
Regards,
André

Hi André.
Flow answered it already. Nothing to add for now. Search a cheap flight and as soon as you know where to start, it is possible to plan. :) Otherwise it is waste of time - time I have to invest in the developing of the website and in the premium users which support the railcc website with the purchase of their Interrail pass on the recommended website.
Thank you for understanding,
Peter :)
