Hey

This is my first time going inter-railing and I am planning on travelling for around 16 days in July and I just needed a bit of advice on my trip really.

My main worry about the travelling aspect of the trip is the journey from Amsterdam to Munich. I have done a bit of research on it but I am struggling to understand the best way to do this, so does anyone have any advice on this?

There are basically two ways of doing this journey.
Number one: Take the City Night Line from Amsterdam Centraal to Munich Hbf.. It´s a direct train, so you don´t have to change trains. Furthermore, you will save one day as you travel overnight. You will have to pay a fee though as reservations are required.
The cheaper alternative is to take the ICE International (departs every two hours from Amsterdam Centraal -> 08:34, 10:34..), stay on this train until Mannheim Hbf. There, you wil have to change trains, and continue on another ICE to Munich. This journey´s about 7 1/2 hours long, but i think it´s a pretty relaxed one as the ICE trains are mostly pretty new (especially the ICE Internation) and comfortable. And there´s another advantage: No extra fees for seat-reservations.

I hope I didn´t post anything completely wrong, if so, please correct me ;)

Hi.
And here the additional links for the information MrMonk already gave you:

Amsterdam - Munich: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/amsterdam-to-munich

Important: Paris - Amsterdam (avoid the Thalys trains!!! Horrible expensive!): https://rail.cc/en/interrail/paris-to-amsterdam

Munich - Prague (free trains - don't use the bus!!!): https://rail.cc/en/interrail/munich-to-prague

And if you like the railcc project, support it and buy your ticket in our online shop. Thank you! :)

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! This should help me out a lot in planning this part of the trip. I was also wondering see if I am getting a train which requires a reservation, how do I book this in advance and how does it work in relation to me buying an inter-rail pass, do I get a discount or does it render the pass pointless?

We mention the special reservation fees for Interrail travellers directly in the train details, as well, where to buy them.

For example the night train Amsterdam to Munich - just scroll down bellow the map:
https://rail.cc/en/interrail/amsterdam-to-munich

Munich - Prague is free.

And Paris to Amsterdam, either by free trains (see link I gave you). If you want to use the Thalys train, you can either get the reservation online here at the railcc shop or at the station in Paris:
[ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux]
But like I said - it isn\'t worth the reservation. The reservation is as high as special fare tickets (without the need of an Interrail pass): https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/thalys/41

Other train types are listed here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation

Always check the railcc connections where you will find free routes: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

Thank you for the advice but I am now going to probably get rather annoying. I am looking at booking tickets online and I have had a look the store on railcc and the DB Bahn one and the problem I keep having is that whenever I look to purchase tickets there is nothing to say I am using a inter rail pass so the trips are looking like they are costing an absolute bomb, I expected to buy the rail pass and then just pay like 30-50 euros or something to reserve a seat but it seems to be much more than that and I need to buy a ticket that is over 100 and the seat reservation on top of that, is that not rendering the pass useless?

Hi.
If you do it exactly like explained here ( https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/amsterdam-munich-cnl419/11 ) you will only have to pay the Interrail reservations like mentioned at the link above.
If you want to save the money for the night train and prefer spending the money for a hostel, travel by free day train from Amsterdam to Munich: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/amsterdam-to-munich

hello again thanks for the help so far I have managed to book everything from hostels and the sleeper train from Amsterdam to Munich. However two problems remain for me involving getting trains from:

Paris to Amsterdam on the 14th July
and
Munich to Prague

I have bought a Inter rail pass for 5 countries in 10 days however what I cannot find is how to book tickets for both these journeys which take into account the fact I have this pass. Whenever I try the Paris to Amsterdam route it just says the fare cannot be calculated.

Any advice?

Hi.
So I hope you bought your Interrail pass here at railcc to support these answers and the whole project. And as you know - free delivery to the UK. :)

Just follow the links I gave you above. INTERRAIL IS YOUR TICKET. No need to book tickets extra. Only if a train requires a reservation.

You can do both routes for free without extra reservations:

Paris to Amsterdam: pay attention, the 14th July is bank holiday in France = national holiday. So connections should be like on a Sunday. If you want to use a high speed Thalys train with extra reservation, you can buy the reservation here at railcc or at Thalys by phone. Just click the train details for more information.
:arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/paris-to-amsterdam

Prague to Munich: free - no need to book something extra. Use the free train connections.
:arr: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/prague-to-munich

Have a nice trip, Peter :)

That is great so I can effectively just turn up with my pass and get access to these trains without having to book anything in advance? Is there not potential availability problems if that is the case if the trains are full?

If a train on these two connections is full (Paris-Amsterdam: the connections without Thalys and TGC), you maybe have to stand some time on the floor. But you can use the train. I never had these problems of a full train on these two connections.
