Hi, I hope someone can help me. It would be much apreciated !
I am trying to find connections for our interrail trip this summer. We are planning to travel from the netherlands to spain (barcelona) and back :) and I am looking at the different options.
We would like to avoid the TGV as much as possible, but I find it difficult to find IC/ICE connections only (without TGV options) does anyone now where or how to search for these trains ???

Hej Fonne,

you can use an online schedule planner to get connections for almost all of Europe. They usually offer options as no high speed trains if you want to find trains which do not require reservations. Have a look here :arr: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

A possible connection for Paris - Perpignan using TER (regional) trains only:

Paris Bercy: 0738 - 1240 Lyon Part Dieu
Lyon Part Dieu 1320 - 1541 Avignon Centre
Avignon Centre 1640 - 1936 Perpignan

Hi Flo,

Great! thanks :)
I was using an online schedule planner, but the wrong one :os
TGV europe ! the name says it ! I did not realize it
Does it make any difference which planner I use ? Is there one better, or do they give different information ??

Hej,

honestly, dont use TGV Europe for searching schedules! :D

Follow the link I provided and you will find three schedule planners which all use the HAFAS database which is the best and most comprehensive online schedule database for Europe I know of.

hmmm, sorry to have a question again :os

but there is still something I do not understand.
I was looking for connections between paris and toulouse and found that it is alost impossible to find a connection without reservation, or I have to go a long route around. But where can I find how much these reservations would cost. The DB planner gives me a train number (3643 and schnelzug) but after checking the railcc information I still did not fint these trains.

I hope this is my last question :)

Hej,

the situation in France is a bit complicated. In general, you have three types of daytime trains:
- TGV: High speed, 6€ reservation
- Intercités: Fast long distance services, 6€ on some routes
- TER: Regional services, no reservation

Since 2012, Intercités is used for two different types of trains: On the one hand the ex-Teoz trains on the routes
.) Paris - Clermont-Ferrand .) Paris - Toulouse and .) Bordeaux - Nice which all require a reservation; on the other hand regular long distance trains without reservation. Nowadays, both types are commonly branded as Intercités so you cannot tell at first sight whether you need a reservation or not. Moreover, the trains are not correctly named Intercités on the schedule planners but instead UAU or Schnellzug or whatever.
In that case it is always a good idea to ask us...we usually know which train is what. ;) We will try to explain these differences more detailed on the railcc website in the future but I am currently really busy at university so this will have to wait until summer. :|
But until then just ask us and remember that on the above mentioned routes all Schnellzug or whatever they are called in the travel planners are likely trains with compulsory reservation.

As for a route to Toulouse, the 3643 does require a reservation but it might be worth to pay for it since the alternatives are really complicated and slow. In France, regional traffic is managed by the relevant regions and SNCF only runs trains when they are ordered from the regions. Thus, you often have good connections within a region but not always between different region...unless you use TGV or Intercités services, that is...
If you want, you can look up all schedules for each region here :arr: http://www.ter-sncf.com/Nationale/Fr/Default.aspx

Hope that helps.
