Hi,

Myself and 3 University friends are planning our first interrailing trip this late June/ July, travelling using the pass where you can travel for 10 out of the 22 days, but are having difficulty planning the best route with the places we want to visit. Currently it stands as this:

1) Berlin (2 nights)
2) Train down to Munich (1 night)
3) Train to Prague (1 night)
4) Train to Budapest (2 nights)
5) Train to Split (4 nights)
6) Ferry across and train to Rome (2 nights)
7) Train to Florence (2 nights)

We would be really grateful for any advice on this itinerary, which is flexible - with this route we have an extremely long journey back to the UK and are unsure as of the best way to travel to Berlin initially (ideally as cheap as possible).

Thank you!

Georgina

Hi Georgina.

Think about starting by ferry from the UK (it depends on where you live - if it makes sense or not).
For example Harwich to Hoek van Holland, then continue by train to Amsterdam. Except of the ferry, the route is free of extra fees: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/london-to-amsterdam

Amsterdam - Berlin: free - https://rail.cc/en/interrail/amsterdam-to-berlin

Berlin - Munich - Prague - Krakow - Budapest - Split - Italy

To travel back to the UK (if you want to do it by train), travel to Nice (France), up to Paris. And Paris to London either by a special price ticket for Eurostar or by ferry or overnight bus.
Don't use the Eurostar train with your Interrail pass as a reservation is required for crazy EUR 75! :|
Details and options here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail/paris-to-london

More schedules and information to connections free of extra fees: https://rail.cc/en/search-interrail-route

I hope this will help you starting to plan you trip. :)
And if you like the railcc project, support it with your purchase of your official Interrail ticket in the railcc shop. Free delivery to the UK. :)
Thank you.
Peter :)

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for your quick and informative response. Would you advise getting the ferry to Holland over Calais (which is the most time and cost effective)? Also do you recommend travelling to fewer places as we are only going for 22 days? Any places in Europe you strongly suggest visiting/ where is popular with fellow student interrailers?

We will be supporting the railcc project!
Thanks again,

Georgina

If you want to go from the UK in direction of Amsterdam, use the day ferry from Harwich to Hoek. It is ~ EUR 35. The ferry Dover - Calais is ~ EUR 25, but much longer. Except you can join a motorist on the ferry and cross the channel for free. Then it is worth doing Dover-Calais.
Maybe also have a look on Eurolines for London-Amsterdam or London-Berlin.

I definitely recommend Eastern Europe. It is cheap and there is a good night life.
If you want to party, think about Berlin but especially Prague, Krakow and Budapest. :)

most of the Eu_ls (its national express) buses (we never say coach here on this continent) use the ferry to go UK->EUR/Calais (and train backward). There is now ALSO megabus.com-fare from 1 GBP/single, direct LON-to Ams or Paris-decide yourself what to take. That ferry is daytime (for night you have to pay more, + more for summer+ more for bed/cabin) and its -well 6-7 hrs on sea with just water to see- or sleep.
or simply cheat a bit and fly back from Firenze or around (Pisa most likely)- check that dreadful RYANair ir whatever-most likely the cheapest and certainly the fastest.
